Description
Kanta Mizuno, widely known by his alias Desert Punk or the Demon of the Desert, is a seventeen-year-old mercenary operating in the harsh landscape of the Great Kanto Desert. Standing rather short and possessing a skinny build, he has medium-length black hair and brown eyes. His typical attire consists of a protective zero-type helmet system that regulates his body temperature, along with clothing made of aramid fibers, including a cape, gloves, pants, and boots. His gear is marked with the red sun-and-horizon symbol of his affiliated Handyman Guild.
Kanta is an extremely cynical and opportunistic individual with virtually no regard for human life, operating on the principle of doing whatever it takes to get the job done. His most defining and often-exploited flaw is an all-consuming lechery, most notably an obsession with women's chests. This weakness repeatedly leads him into trouble, as he is easily manipulated by attractive women who use his desires against him. Despite these seemingly unserious traits, he is a consummate professional when it comes to his work, being highly intelligent, adaptable, and capable of completing nearly any task, regardless of its danger or moral implications.
His legendary reputation in the desert is not solely the result of his combat prowess but is largely a product of his grandiose self-promotion, combined with uncanny good luck, sharp wit, and specialist equipment. He is an expert in deception and misdirection, often employing tactics such as using inflatable, life-sized dummy balloons of himself to confuse enemies about his true location or using a rocket-powered winch on his back to scale high obstacles or swing across areas, a feat that enemies often mistake for the ability to fly.
His signature weapon is an old Winchester Model 1897 shotgun, a memento left to him by his father that has been modified to use various types of ammunition, including flashbangs, smokescreens, and grenade rounds. He is also proficient with explosives, combat knives, and carries a Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver as a sidearm.
Kanta's background reveals that he spent his childhood in Water Station 30 with the Machine Gun Brothers and their sister, Natsuko Kawaguchi, displaying a manipulative and mischievous nature even at a young age. He trained under multiple masters before becoming an independent mercenary. His primary motivation shifts over time from simple survival and accumulating wealth to a larger ambition of gaining enough power to eventually subdue the entire desert under his control.
A pivotal relationship in his life is with his apprentice, Taiko Koizumi, whom he nicknames Kosuna, meaning little sand. He initially refuses to take her on but is convinced after she shows him a photograph of a large-breasted woman she claims is her mother, leading him to agree in the hopes she will develop similarly. Throughout the story, she learns from him but eventually grows independent, leading to a major turning point when he later betrays his old friends and the rebel faction to side with the West Oasis Government. In this later phase, he becomes a frontline commander for a battalion known as the 8th Army and is shown to have sacrificed his right arm for a cybernetic replacement, signifying the lengths he is willing to go to for power.
