Description
Kanta Mizuno, also known as the Demon of the Desert or Desert Punk, is a seventeen-year-old mercenary operating in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the Great Kanto Desert. He is a member of the Handyman Guild, a group that takes on various jobs for hire. Physically, Kanta is notably short for his age, with a skinny build, medium-length black hair, and brown eyes. His signature attire includes a Zero-Type Helmet System that helps regulate his body temperature in the harsh environment, as well as a cape, gloves, and other gear made of aramid fibers. Later in his story, he replaces his helmet with a red bandana and eventually a spiked Stahlhelm.

Kanta's personality is a complex mix of cynical pragmatism and blatant self-interest. He is an extremely opportunistic individual with very little regard for human life, a trait highlighted by his respect for the Oasis Government's policy of making survival the people's own responsibility. He is famously lecherous, with his greatest weakness being his attraction to women, particularly those with large breasts. This obsession often overrides his otherwise sharp judgment, leading him to be easily manipulated by attractive women, most notably by the femme fatale Junko Asagiri, who repeatedly tricks and uses him. Despite his despicable and selfish nature, Kanta is a consummate professional when it comes to his work, taking pride in his reputation for completing any job he is hired for, no matter the cost or danger involved. He is highly intelligent, quick-witted, and a master of deception and underhanded tactics.

Kanta's primary motivation is survival and self-gratification in a lawless world. He seeks money, water, and sexual conquests, seemingly caring little for companionship or loyalty. His legendary reputation is largely a product of his own grandiose self-promotion, combined with genuine skill, sharp intellect, and uncanny good luck. In the story, he takes on a young apprentice named Taiko Koizumi, whom he nicknames Kosuna, a decision he makes based on her promise that she will grow large breasts like her mother. He views her less as a student and more as a potential future object of his desire, though his training does contribute to her growth as a mercenary. His key relationships are often exploitative; he refers to his childhood friends, the Machine Gun Brothers, as his best friends, but in reality, they are simply the people who have known him the longest and whom he frequently coerced into stealing for him. His dynamic with Junko Asagiri is a central pillar of the series, defined by his lust for her and her repeated manipulation of him for her own gain.

As the narrative progresses, Kanta undergoes a significant development, particularly in the manga. He eventually sides with the West Oasis Government during a civil war, betraying his former allies, including Kosuna and Natsuko Kawaguchi, in a calculated move for a promotion. He becomes the frontline commander of the 8th Army, a battalion of Undead robot soldiers, and serves as a primary antagonist for a portion of the story. He sacrifices his right arm to become the leader of this robot army, replacing it with a cybernetic limb. This shift marks his transformation from a comedic anti-hero into a more ruthless and calculating figure, prioritizing power and position over any lingering personal connections.

Kanta's effectiveness as a mercenary stems from his diverse and deceptive combat abilities. His primary weapon is a Winchester Model 1897 shotgun, a family heirloom from his late father, which can be loaded with specialized ammunition such as flashbangs, smokescreens, and grenade rounds. He also carries a combat knife and a Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver as sidearms. His signature tactic is to deceive and confuse his enemies. He uses a rocket-powered winch mounted on his back to propel himself across distances, which enemies often mistake for the ability to fly. He frequently deploys inflatable, human-sized dummy balloons painted to look like himself, creating false targets to obscure his real location. Kanta is also an expert with explosives like C-4 and has been known to rig his own equipment with sabotage devices in case it is stolen.
