Description
Zhu Bajie, also known as Zhu Wuneng, is a humanoid pig distinguished by prominent porcine traits: a fleshy snout, jagged teeth, and ears that taper to coarse points. His imposing stature radiates raw, unrefined power.

Once the celestial Tianpeng Yuanshuai, or “Marshal Canopy,” he governed 80,000 heavenly sailors before his downfall. During a drunken lapse at a divine banquet, his misguided pursuit of the moon goddess Chang’e led to expulsion from Heaven.

Reborn through a swine’s womb on Earth, he adopted the moniker Zhu Ganglie (“Strong-Maned Pig”) and dwelled in Fuling Mountain’s Yunzhang Cave, sustaining himself on human flesh. His porcine form mirrors his earthly vices—gluttony, indolence, and unchecked desire—traits that repeatedly ensnare him in conflict across both celestial and mortal realms.

He wields the nine-toothed rake, a divine relic from his heavenly tenure, with lethal precision, symbolizing his martial prowess and lingering ties to his past divinity.

In the pilgrimage ensemble, Zhu Bajie’s boisterous impulses clash with Sun Wukong’s cunning, forging a bond teeming with rivalry and reluctant solidarity. Though his flaws spark chaos, flashes of valor and steadfastness reveal his indispensable role in their quest.

Upon the journey’s end, Zhu Bajie bypasses enlightenment, instead ascending as the “Cleanser of Altars”—a title that indulges his hunger for sacrificial offerings, immortalizing his unrepentant appetites and the enduring contradictions of his nature.
