Description
Mokona Modoki appears in xxxHOLiC the Movie: A Midsummer Night's Dream as a small, rabbit-like creature with black fur. This particular Mokona is one of two copies of a dimensional god created by the witch Yuuko Ichihara and the wizard Clow Reed. Its true name is Larg, and it was made specifically for the protagonist Kimihiro Watanuki, remaining in Japan with him and Yuuko. In the film, Mokona is seen only at the very beginning and at the very end; during the main events it is absent, mentioned as having been left behind while Watanuki, Yuuko, and Shizuka Doumeki investigate a mysterious mansion.
As a character, this black Mokona has a less enthusiastic and energetic demeanor compared to its white counterpart, but it is still playful and enjoys teasing Watanuki, much to the young man's annoyance. Mokona has a fondness for drinking sake and often joins Yuuko in inventing elaborate and demanding food requests that add to Watanuki's workload. Despite its mischievous side, Mokona is loyal and serves a practical purpose: it acts as a communication link with the white Mokona that accompanies another group of travelers, allowing Yuuko to monitor their progress and provide assistance when needed. In the movie, this long-distance contact is part of the larger crossover narrative, but Mokona itself does not participate directly in the mansion's mystery.
Mokona possesses several notable abilities. It can see ghosts and other supernatural entities, a skill the white Mokona lacks. Its blue earring has the power to seal magical energy, while the red earring on the white Mokona enhances magic. Mokona can also teleport objects by swallowing them and spitting them out, which enables the transfer of items between itself and its counterpart. These functions are later revealed to be part of its set of secret skills. In the film, these abilities are not showcased, but Mokona's role as a dependable companion and a conduit for communication remains consistent.
Motivationally, Mokona exists to serve Yuuko and to assist Watanuki, whom it was created for. It shows no personal arc or development within the movie, serving instead as a familiar presence that reinforces the magical atmosphere of Yuuko's shop and the interconnected nature of the story's world. Its key relationship is with Watanuki, whom it often teases, and with Yuuko, whom it joins in her indulgence in food and drink. Overall, Mokona Modoki in this film is a background figure whose established traits from the larger series—loyalty, playfulness, and supernatural utility—are present but not central to the plot.
