Description
Jura is a major antagonist and a member of the Shitōshin, also known as the Four War Gods, who serve as the primary villains in the fourth Inuyasha film. His name, which translates to "beast," reflects his aggressive and violent nature. As a demon, Jura's physical appearance includes short black and white hair with pale, white eyes. Like his brothers, he possesses pointed ears and a distinctive white diamond-shaped mark on his forehead. His aesthetic and fighting style are notably based on a tiger.
Jura's personality is characterized by his extreme aggression and brutality in combat. He is a fearsome opponent who wields a powerful cannon known as the Saitenhou, or the Thunder Cannon, a weapon he claimed after stealing it from an enemy years before his appearance on Hōraijima. He is known for his lightning-fast speed, which, combined with his heavy artillery, makes him a formidable force on the battlefield. His true demonic form is said to be incredibly powerful, capable of feats such as propelling himself through the air with kicks.
Jura's motivations are deeply intertwined with the history of the Shitōshin. Ages ago, he and his fellow War Gods attacked the island of Hōraijima, a sanctuary for half-demons. During the assault, the island's priestess, Kanade, managed to seal away their true power spheres inside a jeweled comb box before casting herself into the Cauldron of Resonance. Trapped on the island and unable to retrieve their full power, Jura and the other War Gods corrupted the Cauldron with their own demonic energy and enslaved the island's half-demon children. By marking the children and creating a powerful barrier, they ensured they could periodically sacrifice them to the Cauldron to temporarily regain fragments of their lost power, a necessary act for their continued survival on the island.
In the story, Jura is the first of the War Gods to directly engage the main group. As Inuyasha and his friends approach Hōraijima by boat, Jura appears and fires his Thunder Cannon, effortlessly destroying their vessel. He then initiates a pursuit of Miroku, Sango, and Kirara, drawing them away from the others and establishing himself as a direct threat to the monk and demon slayer. Throughout the film, Jura serves as a key obstacle for this pair, showcasing his resilience and offensive capabilities. He later battles them alongside his resurrected brother, Gōra. He also expresses eagerness to regain his original power once the jeweled box is removed from the Cauldron.
Jura's primary relationships are with his fellow Shitōshin: Ryūra, Kyōra, and Gōra. They act as a cohesive unit, bound by their shared goal of reclaiming their strength and escaping their imprisonment on the island. On the opposing side, his main adversaries are Miroku and Sango. The three engage in a sustained aerial battle, where Jura's raw power and cannon are pitted against Miroku's sacred sutras and Wind Tunnel, as well as Sango's giant boomerang, the Hiraikotsu.
Regarding character development, Jura remains a static antagonist. He is defined by his role as a brutal enforcer of the Shitōshin's will. His end comes not through a change of heart or a moment of weakness, but through the clever tactics of his opponents. Miroku utilizes his Wind Tunnel to redirect the blasts from Gōra directly onto Jura, and the severely weakened demon is then finished off by Sango's Hiraikotsu. His death represents a significant victory for the heroes, removing a major threat and demonstrating the effectiveness of their teamwork against the powerful War Gods.
Jura's notable abilities center on his immense physical strength, speed, and his devastating personal weapon. The Saitenhou is a cannon-like device that fires powerful cannonballs capable of massive destruction, as shown when it destroys the group's boat with a single shot. Aside from his firepower, his raw physical prowess is such that even in his base form, he can single-handedly hold his own against Miroku, Sango, and the demon cat Kirara without any difficulty. This combination of speed, strength, and overwhelming long-range offense makes him a truly dangerous enemy.
