Description
Dai is a young half-demon boy who appears as a supporting character in the fourth Inuyasha feature film. He lives on the mysterious island of Horai, a hidden sanctuary that exists outside the normal flow of time, where humans, benevolent demons, and half-demons once sought to live in peace. Dai is the twin brother of another boy named Roku, and the two are part of a small group of half-demon children who have survived a devastating attack on their home.

In terms of background, Dai and his brother were still young children when the Four War Gods, a group of powerful demons, conquered Horai Island and slaughtered nearly all of its inhabitants. As a method of control and to serve their own purposes, the Four War Gods placed a mark called the Mark of the Shitoshin on the children's backs, a curse that prevented them from ever escaping the island and destined them to eventually be used as a sacrifice or fodder for the demons' plans. Consequently, Dai was trapped on the island for an extended period, implied to be decades or even centuries, yet his half-demon nature meant he aged very slowly and physically remained a child.

Dai has a personality that is characterized by immaturity and a sharp, sometimes irritating tongue. He and his twin brother Roku are nearly identical in both appearance and demeanor. They frequently make witty, sarcastic, and unnecessary comments, even in the face of grave danger. A common behavior for them is to mockingly tell the hero Inuyasha that he will not be able to defeat the powerful Four War Gods. This habit of making smart-mouthed remarks often annoys Inuyasha and the other members of his group. Despite their tendency to be a nuisance, their behavior is typical of young children who have developed a cynical and defensive attitude after suffering through a prolonged, traumatic situation.

Physically, Dai and Roku look very similar. They both have tanned skin, sharp and defined facial features, orange-colored eyes, and pointed ears, the latter being a clear sign of their half-demon heritage. The primary ways to distinguish Dai from his twin are his hair and clothing. Dai has mostly orange hair, and he wears a dark blue tunic that is secured at the waist with a simple rope. Like the other half-demon children on the island, he is always barefoot.

The primary motivation for Dai, along with the other children, is simply to survive and escape from their imprisonment on Horai Island. He and the others are resigned to their fates for a time, believing there is no hope of defeating the Four War Gods. Their role in the story is to be the catalyst for the film's conflict. The protagonist Inuyasha and his friends arrive on the island and vow to protect the children, with their quest to defeat the Four War Gods being directly tied to freeing Dai and his companions from their curse. At the beginning of the story, Dai and the other children are passive, awaiting a grim destiny, but they become more active as the film progresses, eventually assisting the heroes in the final battle.

Dai's most significant relationship is with his twin brother, Roku. The two are inseparable and function almost as a single unit, sharing the same thoughts, speaking in tandem, and dressing similarly. They are part of a larger found family of half-demon orphans, which also includes the children Asagi, Shion, Moegi, and Ai. He looks up to the older girl Asagi as a leader figure. His relationship with the main character Inuyasha is one of reluctant dependency. While Dai and his brother constantly mock Inuyasha's abilities, they ultimately come to rely on him for their salvation. Inuyasha, who is himself a half-demon, feels a strong sense of kinship with the children and is determined to save them.

By the end of the film, after the Four War Gods are defeated, Dai experiences significant development. He, his brother Roku, and the other surviving half-demon children are finally freed from the Mark of the Shitoshin and the island's curse. Their home vanishes, but they are given the opportunity to live a new life. Dai chooses to leave Horai Island and sets out with the other children to live in the outside world, finally free from their long imprisonment and able to determine their own futures.

Despite his young age, Dai possesses several notable abilities as a half-demonic being. He exhibits enhanced strength, as he is able to carry a large and heavy piece of wood, thicker than a human arm, when the children build a raft. He also displays immense durability, surviving powerful explosions and the destruction of large portions of Horai Island without suffering serious injury. Furthermore, he has an extended lifespan and a slow aging process, having remained physically a child for what is implied to be a very long time, possibly centuries, on the mystical island.
