Description
Gora is one of the four primary antagonists in the anime film InuYasha the Movie 4: Fire on the Mystic Island. He is a member of the Shitōshin, a group of powerful demons known as the Four War Gods, which also includes Ryūra, Jūra, and Kyōra. This group is said to be based on the Four Celestial Animals from Chinese mythology; Gora specifically corresponds to the tortoise, Genbu.
The Four War Gods are the tyrants of Hōrai Island, a mystical island that appears only once every fifty years. Their role in the story is to serve as the central threat, as they have enslaved a group of half-demon children and marked them with scars that tie the children to their power. Gora shares the same background and motivation as his brethren: they seek to regain their full, original power, which was sealed away decades ago by a priestess named Kanade. She trapped their power spheres inside a box and leapt into the island's Cauldron of Resonance, preventing the demons from leaving the island. To compensate for this lost power, the War Gods sustain themselves by sacrificing half-demons in the cauldron.
Fifty years before the main events of the film, Gora played a pivotal and vicious role during a confrontation with Inuyasha and the priestess Kikyō. When the pair arrived on the island, the Four War Gods ambushed them. During this attack, Gora extracted some of Kikyō's blood, which was later used to create a malevolent doppelgänger of her to serve the War Gods. This act establishes Gora as a cunning and cruel demon who uses the essence of his enemies for his own purposes.
At the start of the film, Gora is one of the first major demons the main characters encounter. After the young half-demon Ai escapes from Hōrai Island, Gora tracks her to the mainland and engages Inuyasha and his friends in battle. He is initially defeated by the group, which allows them to rescue Ai and learn about the situation on the island. Later in the film, after the power spheres are released from their seal, Gora is resurrected and restored to his full strength. He participates in the final battle against Miroku and Sango. In this fight, Gora demonstrates his notable abilities, which include firing powerful energy blasts from his mouth. The monk Miroku uses his Wind Tunnel to redirect one of Gora's own blasts, which strikes and destroys Jūra, another of the War Gods. Following this, Gora is finally obliterated when Inuyasha uses his technique, the Backlash Wave, to finish him off. Gora does not undergo any significant development; he remains a purely antagonistic force whose only purpose is to regain his power and destroy anyone who interferes with the War Gods' dominion over Hōrai Island.
