Description
Ryura is the primary antagonist and the leader of the Four War Gods, a group of powerful demons who have taken control of Horai Island. His appearance is marked by features reminiscent of a dragon, and he is aligned with the storm god of the eastern sea, Seiryu, representing the element of wind. Ryura's history with the series' protagonist, Inuyasha, predates the main events of the film. Fifty years before the story's present, Ryura and his comrades confronted Inuyasha and the priestess Kikyo on the island. During this encounter, Ryura personally slashed Inuyasha across the back, leaving him with a glowing red scar known as the mark of the Four War Gods. This scar served as a brand, ensuring Inuyasha could never truly be free from the War Gods' influence and marking the beginning of a long-standing, bitter feud between the two.

In terms of personality, Ryura is portrayed as cruel, cunning, and sadistic. He possesses supreme confidence in his own power and the combined might of the Four War Gods, which often leads him to underestimate his opponents. True to this arrogance, he harbors a deep contempt for half-demons, viewing them as weak and mundane beings unworthy of respect. His primary motivation is to regain his full power and maintain his dominion over Horai Island. Like his comrade Kyora, Ryura also seems to seek out powerful opponents to battle, though he expressed disappointment in Inuyasha during their second encounter, finding the half-demon weaker than he had hoped.

Ryura's role in the story is that of the main antagonist who drives the central conflict. He and the other War Gods have been using the half-demon children on Horai Island as sacrifices to restore a portion of their sealed-away powers. When Inuyasha and his friends return to the island to rescue the children, Ryura confronts them directly, renewing his old rivalry with Inuyasha in a series of ferocious battles. His key relationships are primarily with his three comrades—Jura, Kyora, and Gora—whom he leads. Though cruel to outsiders, he appears to have a degree of respect for his fellow War Gods. His relationship with Inuyasha is the most significant, defined by their past encounter and his desire to prove his superiority. In his first confrontation with Inuyasha on the island, Ryura easily overpowers him, but his body begins to fade as his sealed power wanes, forcing him to retreat. Later, after reclaiming his power sphere, he fights Inuyasha again and is ultimately destroyed. However, in a final attempt at victory, his spirit endures within his power sphere, which merges with the spheres of the other defeated War Gods to create a single, immense entity with Ryura's face as the dominant feature. This combined form is ultimately destroyed by Inuyasha and Kagome working together.

Ryura is a highly formidable warrior. He wields two large demonic swords: the Fūjinga, or Wind Blade, and the Raijinga, or Thunder Blade. With these weapons, he can command the elements of wind and lightning. His techniques include the Earth Dragon Gale, a defensive technique that uses the Wind Blade to create a spinning dome of compressed air strong enough to deflect Inuyasha's Wind Scar attack. Offensively, he can unleash powerful tornadoes and use the Raijinga to summon localized thunderstorms that strike his enemies with a single devastating bolt of lightning called Dragon Lightning. As a master swordsman, his dual-wielding style allows him to match Inuyasha's Tessaiga in combat. Ryura's power is immense, derived from a sphere of power typically embedded on his forehead. While the majority of this power was sealed away for a time, even in a diminished state, he was strong enough to dominate Inuyasha. When his full power was restored, he demonstrated enhanced strength, speed, and endurance, capable of breaking the diamond attacks from Inuyasha's Kongōsōha with his bare arms. His demonic power is such that even in death, his soul could reside in his power sphere, allowing him to merge with his brothers as a final, last resort.
