TV-Series
Description
Kouhei Morioka is a freelance photographer and the male lead in MoonPhase. He has short dark brown hair and brown eyes with a golden tint, and typically dresses in plain, casual clothing. His personality is generally laid-back, though he can be self-deprecating and occasionally doubts his own abilities.
From a young age, Kouhei was involved in a paranormal accident that left him unable to perceive spirits or supernatural phenomena. Ironically, he specializes in photographing occult and ghostly subjects, making a living by capturing images he cannot personally see. He is also an Ama Lamia, a rare type of human sometimes called a Vampire Lover, which renders him immune to the servitude-inducing effects of a vampire's bite; no vampire can make him their servant through the typical blood pact.
The story begins when Kouhei travels to a castle in Germany to take photographs for an occult magazine edited by his friend Hiromi Anzai. Inside, he meets Hazuki, a young vampire girl who has been confined there. She bites him in an attempt to enslave him, but the pact fails due to his Ama Lamia nature. With the help of his cousin, Kouhei assists in freeing Hazuki from the castle, and she subsequently follows him back to Japan, moving into his grandfather's house.
Hazuki insists that Kouhei is her servant because she fed on his blood, but he consistently refuses to obey her, particularly when her demands are unreasonable. Their dynamic is initially combative, with Kouhei often exasperated by Hazuki's haughty attitude. Over time, however, his protective instincts grow. Faced with repeated attacks from Hazuki's family and other vampires, he becomes determined to safeguard her, even without supernatural powers of his own. His primary motivation shifts from tolerating a bizarre living situation to actively keeping Hazuki safe and eventually understanding her lonely existence.
Throughout the series, Kouhei's relationship with Hazuki evolves from reluctant cohabitation into a deep, protective bond. While he does not undergo dramatic physical change, his emotional development is marked by increased resolve and a willingness to stand up against dangerous supernatural forces. His key abilities remain his photographic skill, his unusual immunity to vampire commands, and his grounded, human perspective that often counterbalances Hazuki's otherworldly nature.
