Description
Chamo, whose full name is Albert Chamomile, is a small, white, talking ermine who serves as a close companion and self-proclaimed familiar to the young mage Negi Springfield. Chamo is not merely an animal but a type of magical creature, specifically an ermine elf or fairy akin to a Cait Sith, possessing a long, prehensile tail tipped with black. His physical appearance includes a white coat, small black dot-like eyes, and four prominent whiskers.

The history between Chamo and Negi began many years before the main story. When Negi was only five years old, he found and freed Chamo from a trap. This act of kindness created a lasting bond, and since that time, Chamo has frequently sought out Negi whenever he found himself in trouble, positioning himself as an advisor and companion. However, his initial appearance in Japan at Mahora Academy, where Negi is a teacher, was motivated by more than just loyalty. Chamo had fled the magical world to escape legal consequences for stealing over three thousand pairs of girls' underwear. He realized that if he became the familiar of a wizard, the magical authorities could no longer arrest him, so he convinced the trusting Negi to form a familiar contract with him by claiming the stolen garments were to keep his sick sister warm.

Chamo's personality is a complex mix of genuine care for Negi and deeply self-serving, often perverse, tendencies. On one hand, he is fiercely loyal to Negi and will fight to protect him when he is in real danger. On the other, he is opportunistic and greedy, frequently devising schemes to profit from his association with the young mage. His most pervasive method is facilitating Pactio, or probationary magical contracts, between Negi and other individuals, as he earns a commission of fifty thousand Ermine Dollars for each successful contract. This financial motivation drove him to orchestrate events like the Kiss Negi game during a class trip to Kyoto, for which he rigged a magic circle around an inn so that anyone who kissed Negi would automatically trigger a Pactio. While this particular scheme resulted in only one successful contract, it is emblematic of his resourcefulness and his willingness to manipulate situations for personal gain. He is also notorious for his lecherous behavior, primarily his compulsive theft of girls' undergarments and voyeuristic acts, such as stealing swimsuits from a bathing area. This habit consistently provokes the violent wrath of other characters, most notably Asuna Kagurazaka, who frequently punishes him when she catches him in his perverted acts. Despite being likely much older than the students, he affectionately refers to Negi as Aniki, meaning big brother, and addresses the girls as Ane-san or similar variations of big sister.

Within the story, Chamo's primary roles are that of advisor, facilitator, and occasional comic relief. He acts as Negi's most trusted, if sometimes unreliable, source of information on magical matters. His vast knowledge of magic is crucial, particularly his ability to draw and erect the complex magic circles required to perform a Pactio ceremony. He also demonstrates competence in other areas, such as casting anti-telepathy spells and showing considerable skill with a computer, including ordering items from magical websites. Despite his poor judgment and flawed advice at times, his ability to analyze dangerous situations calmly when others are panicking and quickly devise countermeasures proves valuable. He has a disturbing habit of meticulously tracking the romantic feelings of the girls in Negi's class toward the young teacher, which often leads to awkward or embarrassing situations for everyone involved.

Chamo's key relationships are primarily centered on Negi and the girls of Class 3-A. His bond with Negi is the most significant, rooted in their shared past and his role as an advisor, even if his schemes often take advantage of Negi's naivety. He has a volatile but predictable relationship with Asuna, who serves as his primary punisher and the one most suspicious of his motives. He has worked to form Pactios with and become a confidant to several of Negi's other students, including Nodoka Miyazaki, Yue Ayase, Konoka Konoe, Setsuna Sakurazaki, and Haruna Saotome. Despite his annoying habits, he has formed friendships outside the main group as well, such as with Chachazero, a magic puppet, with whom he would sometimes go drinking after school.

Across the various adaptations of Negima, some aspects of Chamo's character are portrayed differently. In the anime retelling Negima!, his perverted traits are toned down compared to the original manga, though he still frequently earns Asuna's fury. His development continues in the spin-off sequel series UQ Holder!, where he appears not as an ermine but as an elderly humanoid gentleman living in a magical village. Even in this aged form, he retains his core personality, as he is shown maintaining his old habit of stealing panties, this time from the character Kirie Sakurame.

Chamo's notable abilities are not focused on raw offensive power. His magical level is considered low compared to the powerful mages in the series, but he excels in specific, technical applications of magic. His most important skill is drawing the intricate magic circles required for creating Pactio contracts, a process he has mastered. For self-defense or distraction in a fight, he employs a creative non-magical technique he calls the Ermine Flash, which involves setting off flash bangs with his lighter to create a bright, disorienting explosion.
