Description
Camomile Albert, almost universally referred to by the nickname Chamo, is a small, talking ermine (or stoat) with white fur and a characteristically long tail tipped in black. He is a supporting character known for a personality that blends genuine cunning with comedic vice. Originally a human magician, he was transformed into his current animal form as a punishment, though he is also identified as a type of elf or fairy, a fact he claims to be quite proud of. Despite his small stature, he is a chain-smoker and possesses a thoroughly self-interested and perverted nature, most famously demonstrated by his uncontrollable compulsion to steal women's underwear, a hobby that has landed him in significant legal trouble.

Chamo's background and primary motivation are tied directly to his history with Negi Springfield. The two met when a five-year-old Negi freed Chamo from a trap, an act of kindness that forged a lasting bond between them. However, Chamo is not solely motivated by loyalty. When he fled the magical world to avoid arrest for stealing over three thousand pairs of girls' underwear, he manipulated the kind-hearted Negi into making him his familiar by inventing a story about needing the garments to keep his sick sister warm. This act of becoming a familiar grants him a measure of legal protection, and he frequently uses Negi as a refuge from the consequences of his own actions.

Within the story, Chamo serves as Negi's unofficial advisor and a key facilitator of magical contracts. He possesses specialized knowledge of magic circles and is the primary character responsible for drawing the circles required to perform a Pactio, a ritual that forms a magical partnership between a mage and his ministra. He is highly proactive in this role, constantly scheming to arrange new Pactios between Negi and his female students. His motivation is not purely altruistic; each successful contract earns him a commission of fifty thousand Ermine Dollars, a fact that drives much of his meddling. He even orchestrated a game of "Kiss Negi" during a class trip to Kyoto to trick several students into forming contracts. Despite his greedy and deceptive tactics, his actions are instrumental in significantly strengthening Negi's magical capabilities throughout the series.

Chamo is a character of contradictions. While he is often depicted as a cowardly figure who bows to those stronger than himself, he also has moments of surprising competence and bravery, particularly when Negi is in danger. He is skilled at rapidly analyzing dangerous situations and formulating countermeasures when others are panicking, even if his plans frequently have major flaws. He acts as a mentor of sorts, using his knowledge of the magical world to guide the young mage and his friends. His relationships are defined by a set of self-assigned nicknames: he calls Negi "Aniki" (big brother) and addresses the female students as "Ane-san" (big sister), despite likely being much older than them. His perverted antics and scheming nature make him a frequent target of Asuna Kagurazaka's violent temper, and he serves as a comedic foil and punching bag throughout the series.

In terms of notable abilities, Chamo's magical power is not geared toward combat like other characters. His true expertise lies in ritual and practical magic. This includes the ability to cast anti-telepathy spells and, most importantly, his unique skill for drawing functional Pactio magic circles. He also possesses a bizarre but disturbingly effective talent for tracking the owners of women's underwear from great distances and maintains a detailed, self-serving analysis of the girls' romantic feelings for Negi. When a distraction is needed, he can ignite flash bangs with his lighter, a trick he calls the "Ermine Flash". Beyond his magical skills, he is surprisingly adept with computers, using them to order magical items online. His character remains consistent across various adaptations and even into the sequel series, UQ Holder!, where he appears in his ermine form and later as an elderly man, still inexplicably clinging to his habit of stealing panties.
