Description
Bart Garsus is a young man from the planet Taraak, where he held the status of a first-class citizen thanks to his wealthy parents who owned a successful food production company. Despite this privileged background, his initial demeanor stands in stark contrast to his elevated social standing, as he is portrayed as easily excitable, physically weak, and notably cowardly. He has a tendency to flee from difficult situations and makes a significant fuss over even minor injuries, often presenting himself in a boastful or pretentious manner to mask his insecurities.

Within the story, Bart finds himself aboard the pirate ship Nirvana, where he unexpectedly becomes the vessel's helmsman, a role for which the ship itself seemed to select him. This position proves to be vital, as he is uniquely capable of piloting the Nirvana and operating its weapon systems. His primary motivation is often survival and finding a way to fit in with his new and intimidating surroundings, leading him to brag about his navigational skills to appear useful to the predominantly female crew. He frequently serves as a source of comic relief, his exaggerated reactions and failed attempts at looking impressive providing a lighter counterbalance to the series' more serious moments.

A significant turning point in Bart's development occurs when the Nirvana visits a polluted planet, where he shows unexpected compassion for a terminally ill young girl. He spends time telling her embellished stories and making her laugh, and when a Harvest ship threatens her planet, he demonstrates genuine courage for the first time, fighting off the enemy almost single-handedly. Tragically, the girl dies from her illness while he is away, leaving behind an unfinished doll she had made of him, which lacked only the hair. In a profound act of memory and respect, Bart shaves his own head to match the incomplete doll and wears it as a pendant, an event that marks a clear maturation of his character.

Regarding his key relationships, Bart develops strong romantic feelings for the Nirvana's second-in-command, Buzam A. Calessa, commonly known as BC. He makes several awkward and often ignored attempts to gain her attention and affection. A central aspect of this relationship is the revelation of BC's secret, which is a significant source of confusion for Bart, given his upbringing in the all-male society of Taraak where same-sex relations were the norm. Despite the initial shock upon discovering the truth, his feelings for BC ultimately do not waver, and he continues to pursue a relationship, demonstrating a loyalty that transcends his previous superficial understanding of gender. While he matures and settles somewhat as the series progresses, contributing to the Nirvana's transformations, his core personality traits remain, ensuring he continues to provide a comic presence. He is known to be the only person capable of navigating the Nirvana, a notable ability that secures his essential role on the ship.
