Description
Parfet Balblair is a supporting character in the anime Vandread Integral. She is an eighteen-year-old member of the Mejeer pirate crew who serves as the chief engineer of the ship. She has a cheerful, friendly demeanor and a studious look, wearing large round glasses that cover much of her face and keeping her brown hair in two large pigtails. Though her usual work clothes make her appear unassuming, she is highly capable in her technical role.
Her background is that of a dedicated mechanic. Parfet spends most of her time monitoring the Paeksys system that supplies the vessel with power and keeping the ship's engines in working order. She holds a personal belief that all machines are alive, and she treats mechanical systems with genuine care and affection. This philosophy guides her work as an engineer, and she is known for being able to fix almost anything. In addition to her regular duties, she uses her spare time to build inventions for the crew, such as a snow machine she worked hard to make functional for a Christmas celebration.
In terms of personality, Parfet is easygoing and avoids confrontation. Among the crew, she is notable for holding no hostility toward the men who come aboard, and she is one of the members most inclined to get along with them. She is also supportive of her shipmates' personal lives, especially regarding Dita's feelings for Hibiki. Her relaxed attitude occasionally leads to failed experiments or odd creations, but her enthusiasm for her work remains steady.
Her role in the story centers on keeping the ship operational through various challenges, and she is frequently shown tending to the engines or the Paeksys system. Early on, she is partnered with Duelo, the ship's doctor, as the two share a common patient, and this working relationship develops into a close bond over the course of the story. By the end, the two appear to share a mutual romantic attraction, which becomes evident when Parfet grows jealous after another crew member accidentally grabs hold of Duelo.
Parfet's development is shown through these growing personal connections. She begins largely as a hardworking technical figure focused on her machines and gradually becomes more integrated into the crew's emotional life, particularly through her relationship with Duelo and her supportive presence among her friends.
Her notable abilities lie in engineering and mechanics. As chief engineer, she is responsible for controlling and maintaining the Paeksys, although even she struggles to fully manage it at times, and she regularly invents new devices and improves the ship's systems. Her skill at repairing machinery, combined with her belief that machines are living things, makes her an essential part of the crew's daily operations.
