Description
Corin Nander is a supporting character from the anime Turn A Gundam, primarily appearing in the second half of the series and its compilation film, Turn A Gundam II: Moonlight Butterfly. He is a sergeant in the Dianna Counter, the military arm of the Moonrace. His most defining trait is that he is a soldier from a long-vanished era, known as the Dark History. Preserved across thousands of years through the Moonrace's cryogenic freezing technology, Corin is a living relic of the apocalyptic conflicts that once devastated civilization. However, this extensive period of suspended animation came at a great cost, causing severe brain damage that has left him mentally unbalanced and delusional. His unstable psychological state is reflected in his physical appearance, which includes a prominent bruise on his face caused by a thawing error and notably frizzy hair, a stark contrast to the handsome blonde man he was rumored to have been before his imprisonment.
Corin was originally a military prisoner, sentenced to a hibernation sentence for his involvement in protecting Queen Dianna Soreil from an assassination plot. He is eventually released and sent to Earth by the powerful Moonrace figure Agrippa Maintainer, alongside subordinates Bruno and Jacop, with the objective of assisting the Dianna Counter forces in subduing the Turn A Gundam. His appearance on the battlefield is marked by a ferocious and violent personality. He is immediately and singularly obsessed with destroying the Turn A, which he recognizes on sight as a "Gundam" or a "White Devil." Unlike most other characters in the series, who are largely unaware of the full scope of the Dark History, Corin possesses a visceral, traumatic memory of the suffering that Gundams and their immense power caused in the past. This obsession is so profound that his fixation leads directly to the destruction of Nocis City during his initial confrontations with the Turn A.
In a climactic early battle against Loran Cehack in the Turn A, Corin’s Eagail mobile suit falls into a volcanic mountain cycle. Presumed dead, he miraculously survives but re-emerges later in the series with a completely altered demeanor. Having lost his memories, he now wanders the land dressed in the garb of a Buddhist monk. In this state, he is docile and childlike, showing a gentle side as he carves wooden dolls for children. He encounters Queen Dianna again by chance, and she befriends him, though she is initially confused by his dramatic shift in personality. This peaceful interlude is shattered when he arrives at a town holding a festival that features a large straw float built in the likeness of the Turn A Gundam. The sight of the replica triggers a violent relapse, causing him to go berserk and regain all his traumatic memories. He rampages through the festival to destroy the straw effigy, a symbolic act of his deep-seated need to vanquish the "Gundam" he believes is the source of all suffering. Loran, piloting the real Turn A, is forced to intervene, tricking the delusional Corin into believing he has destroyed the real machine, which temporarily calms him.
Despite his insanity, Corin is a highly skilled and elite soldier. After realizing he was deceived about destroying the replica, he eventually begins to regain more of his senses. Recognizing the greater threat posed by the warmongering Gym Ghingham and his Turn X, Corin makes the conscious choice to fight alongside his former enemies, including Loran, Dianna, and the combined forces of the Earth Militia and Dianna Counter. He requests a custom mobile suit from the Dianna Counter's mechanics, resulting in a modified, red-painted Kapool. This unique machine is equipped with signature weapons that reflect his aggressive and unorthodox style, including a Minchi Drill salvaged from his old Eagail and a Rocket Punch—a large fist from a WaDom mobile suit that can be fired as a projectile, a rarity in the Gundam franchise.
In the final battle against Gym Ghingham's fleet, Corin pilots his custom Kapool with fierce determination. He is instrumental in protecting his allies, notably pushing Sochie and Miashei out of danger before engaging the enemy. When Gym unleashes the devastating Moonlight Butterfly from the Turn X, a weapon of mass destruction that can annihilate all civilization, Corin has a moment of terrifying clarity, recalling the true scale of destruction from his own era. While a brief flashback in the series to the face of the Wing Gundam Zero implies he may have originated from the After Colony timeline, his identity remains deliberately ambiguous. Ultimately, Corin makes a final, suicidal charge against the Turn X. He sacrifices himself to try and prevent the Moonlight Butterfly from once again ending the world, his Kapool being destroyed in the attack. His final act cements his role not as a mindless berserker, but as a tragic figure who, after millennia of madness, finds redemption by using his lost warrior's skills to protect the future from the very horrors of the past that broke his mind.
