Movie
Description
Guin Sard Lineford is a young nobleman who serves as the administrative lord of the Inglessa region on Earth. At just nineteen years old, he becomes a central figure in the Inglessa Militia, driven by a powerful ambition to spark an industrial revolution on the planet. He is the grandson of Lord Messer of Inglessa, placing him in a position of privilege and responsibility from a young age.
In terms of personality, Guin is charismatic, politically astute, and highly progressive for a member of Earth's aristocracy. He possesses a sharp intelligence and a talent for navigating complex political landscapes. However, this is balanced by a deep-seated ambition and a ruthless pragmatism. He is perfectly willing to manipulate and use others to achieve his goals, which are ultimately focused on his vision for Earth's future rather than the immediate welfare of its people. His advanced planning skills are evident, as he had already established secret radio contact with the technologically superior Moonrace two years before their official return to Earth.
Guin's primary motivation is to bring about an industrial revolution on Earth by acquiring and integrating the advanced technology of the Moonrace. He believes this is the only way for Earth to advance and secure its place in the upcoming power struggle. His role in the story is initially that of a leader and negotiator for the Earth's population. He organizes the Inglessa Militia to defend against the Diana Counter, the Moonrace's advance force, while simultaneously trying to broker a peaceful settlement. He acts as the primary spokesperson for the Earth side during the early negotiations with the Moonrace.
Guin's key relationships define much of his trajectory. His most notable connection is with Loran Cehack, a young Moonrace soldier living on Earth. Guin develops a deep, possessive attachment to Loran, often referring to him by the feminine name Laura. This affection, described as a boy-loving tendency, stems from a desire to keep the pilot of the powerful Turn A Gundam close to him, both as a military asset and as an object of personal fixation. Director Tomino has commented that Guin's character and his sexuality were meant to explore the coexistence of masculine and feminine natures within a person, which is reflected in his struggle to simply accept Loran as he is. He also has a pragmatic relationship with Lily Borjarno, the daughter of the lord of Lusiana, who is his fiancée. After losing his own capital, he relies on her family's power and the Lusiana Militia to mount a comeback.
Guin's development throughout the conflict is a story of initial promise giving way to a corrupting desire for power. Early on, he is a respected leader who guides the Earth forces. However, after the capital city of Nocis is destroyed and he temporarily loses his position, his ambition hardens. His turning point occurs when he views the video records of the Dark History, a archive of humanity's past wars and destructive technologies. The immense power he sees there fuels his hegemonism, leading him to betray his allies. He steals data on the Dark History and makes a Faustian bargain with Gym Ghingham, the leader of a militaristic Moonrace faction. This alliance is a desperate attempt to seize control and force the industrial revolution he desires.
Notable abilities for Guin are less about combat and more about his strategic foresight, political maneuvering, and negotiation skills. He is exceptionally skilled at playing different factions against one another and planning long-term. However, his fatal flaw is an inability to fully control the situations he engineers. He cannot command his own militia effectively, leading to a disastrous all-out attack against the Moonrace that results in the destruction of his capital. Ultimately, his schemes lead to his downfall when Gym Ghingham's forces turn on him. In the final battle, his flagship, the Willgem, is critically damaged by the Turn X. Having lost all his power and influence, he is last seen leaving for the Gallic continent alongside Merrybell Gadget, in effect going into exile as the Earth finally begins to enter the industrial revolution he had always wanted.
