Description
Poe Aijee is a Moonrace soldier in the Dianna Counter, the military force that accompanies Queen Dianna Soreil on her return to Earth in Turn A Gundam. She is a young woman of about twenty with very short black hair, purple eyes, and a neat, sharp-featured, somewhat androgynous appearance. She serves as an officer and eventually reaches the rank of lieutenant.
Her most distinctive trait is her fragile emotional composure. Stubborn, proud, and intensely disliking defeat, she is also quick to tears and breaks down weeping whenever an operation ends in failure, so often that her comrades call her the crybaby Poe, a nickname that gives one episode of the series its title. She is not malicious or dishonest; rather, she sincerely tries to carry out her duties, but she panics easily and her judgment tends to crumble under pressure.
Her role in the story is substantial from the beginning. She descends to Earth with the first return fleet as a pilot of the giant Wodom mobile armor. Although she has been ordered not to attack, she is provoked by repeated harassment from the Earth Militia's propeller aircraft and, giving in to anger, fires the Wodom's anti-ship beam cannon. That shot rouses the dormant Turn A Gundam and effectively opens the war between the Moon and Earth. From that point she repeatedly challenges the Turn A, which she calls the mustache, and is defeated almost every time, returning to base in tears.
Her motivations are shaped by conflicting loyalties. She is genuinely devoted to Dianna but becomes frustrated with the queen's insistence on resolving everything through dialogue. This frustration makes her receptive when her superior, Captain Phil Ackman, flatters her and tempts her with the prospect of becoming queen. She joins the coup that Phil stages against Dianna, helps seize the battleship Soleil, and supports the plan to found a new state. Even so, her loyalty to Dianna never fully disappears: when she is ordered to forcibly retrieve the woman the coup faction believes to be Dianna, she hesitates and weeps, torn between her oath to the queen and Phil's commands.
Her key relationships change as the story progresses. She clashes constantly with Harry Ord, the captain of Dianna's royal guard, and the two sometimes even confront each other on the battlefield; by the end of the series, however, they fight side by side, and Poe engages the formidable Turn X in close combat. When Gym Gingnham's forces descend on Earth, she accepts Dianna's return, reconciles with the Earth Militia and the Dianna Counter, and joins the common struggle against the new enemy. After the war she becomes an assistant to the archaeologist Sid Munzer and devotes herself to excavating the ancient ruins of the Mountain Cycle.
As a pilot, her mobile suit abilities are respectable: in addition to the Wodom, she later flies a Silver SUMO. Her conduct in operations, however, is marked by repeated blunders. The most dangerous comes during a pursuit of a comrade who has stolen nuclear warheads; when the man refuses to hand them over, she angrily and persistently fires beams toward the warheads despite the warnings of her wingmate and despite having seen the craters left by an earlier explosion, risking a detonation that would have destroyed them all.
