Description
Kazu Shiota, who is known in the original Japanese version as Hirokazu Shiota, is a central supporting character in the Digimon Tamers series and appears in the film Digimon Tamers: Runaway Locomon. He is an elementary school student and one of the closest friends of the protagonist, Takato Matsuki. Physically, he is a young boy with lightly tanned skin, spiky light brown hair, and dark blue eyes, standing slightly taller than other children his age. He typically wears a dark blue T-shirt featuring a stylized cross emblem, yellow-cream shorts, reddish-brown wristbands, olive green socks, blue and grey shoes, and often a dark blue and green tennis visor when not in school.

Kazu is an avid and skilled player of the DigiBattle Card Game, frequently boasting about his ability to defeat his friends Takato and Kenta Kitagawa. He largely serves as a source of comic relief, known for his constant jokes, wisecracks, and confident, sometimes brash, demeanor. Despite his tendency to brag, he is a deeply loyal and true friend. Underneath the bluster, he is eager to help others and refuses to give up in dire situations when his friends need him. His friendship with Takato is particularly close, and in the English version, he often affectionately refers to him as "chumley". He is rarely seen without his other best friend, Kenta, and the two often perform comedic routines together.

Kazu's primary motivation throughout the series is a desire to become a Digimon Tamer himself. He secretly wants to be as capable as Takato and the others, and this drive leads him to accompany the group to the Digital World. His loyalty is a strong motivating factor, as seen when he stands by his future partner, Guardromon, after the Digimon is wounded in battle, solidifying their bond.

Within the overarching story, Kazu evolves from a skeptical outsider into a full-fledged Tamer. Initially, he struggles to accept the reality of Digimon, fleeing when he first sees Guilmon. However, after witnessing a major battle, he comes to understand what being a Tamer truly means and reconnects with Takato. He proves his ingenuity by drawing a homemade Blue Card for Takato, which successfully functions to help save the day. In the Digital World, after aiding an injured Andromon who de-digivolves into Guardromon due to his wounds, a D-Power appears for Kazu, officially making him Guardromon's partner. Their relationship is marked by Guardromon’s tendency to copy his Tamer, often with humorous results due to literal misunderstandings.

In the film Digimon Tamers: Runaway Locomon, Kazu continues his role as a supportive Tamer and friend. During Locomon's rampage, he travels with his partner Guardromon, Kenta, and Kenta's partner MarineAngemon. They meet up with Henry Wong and Lopmon, following the runaway train on a small railcar that Guardromon propels using his own thrusters. When Parasimon appear and begin causing havoc, Kazu and Guardromon actively join the battle to assist the other Tamers. Following the resolution of the crisis, Kazu attends Rika Nonaka's birthday party alongside the rest of the group.

As a Tamer, Kazu does not possess any inherent superhuman abilities. His strength lies in his strategic mind for the Digimon card game, which translates into practical combat support, and his unwavering courage. His notable abilities are demonstrated through his partnership with Guardromon, a powerful, machine-type Digimon. Under Kazu's command, Guardromon provides significant physical offensive and defensive capabilities, using its powerful arms and body to fight. While Guardromon may lack the raw power of other Digimon in the group, Kazu's tactical thinking and his partner's resilience make them a valuable asset in battle.
