Description
In the narrative of InuYasha the Movie 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler, the character known as the Inu no Taisho, or the Great Dog Demon, serves as a pivotal figure whose legacy drives the conflict. He was a powerful inu daiyōkai, a great dog demon, who ruled the western lands and was renowned throughout feudal Japan as a formidable general. His background is defined by a life of great battles, having faced and defeated numerous powerful adversaries, including the dragon demon Ryukotsusei, a battle from which he suffered mortal wounds, and other foes like the Panther King and the moth demon Hyoga.

In terms of personality, the Inu no Taisho is portrayed as a creature of profound honor and surprising compassion, particularly for a demon of his stature. Despite being a pure-blooded demon, he possessed a merciful heart for humankind, a trait noted even by his firstborn son, Sesshomaru. This compassion was not born of weakness but from a place of strength and deliberate principle. He was not bigoted toward humans nor was he evil, and his actions suggest a desire for his kind and the human race to coexist in peace. His motivations are deeply rooted in protection and legacy. Rather than seeking power for its own sake, his primary concern, especially towards the end of his life, was to protect those he loved. This is most clearly seen in his final actions, where he rushed to save his human mate, Izayoi, and their newborn son, Inuyasha, without first tending to his own life-threatening injuries.

His role in the story is that of an unseen but essential architect. Though he dies at the very beginning of the film’s timeline, his actions and his will dictate the entire plot. The three legendary swords he wielded—Tessaiga, Tenseiga, and So'unga—are central to the movie’s conflict. He left specific instructions for each, bequeathing the defensive Tessaiga, which protects humans, to Inuyasha, and the healing Tenseiga to Sesshomaru as a lesson in compassion and a test to see if his son had someone to protect. The third sword, the malevolent So'unga, which he alone could control, was sealed away. His death occurs on the night of Inuyasha's birth; after defeating Ryukotsusei, he arrived at Izayoi’s burning castle, used Tenseiga to resurrect her after she was killed, and gave her the Robe of the Fire-Rat to ensure their escape. He then faced and perished while fighting the human warlord Takemaru, using his last strength to name his son Inuyasha. His enormous skeleton, that of a dog in armor, rests within a tomb accessible via a black pearl in Inuyasha's eye.

The Inu no Taisho’s key relationships are the primary drivers of the film's character dynamics. With Sesshomaru, his firstborn son, the relationship was strained. Sesshomaru perceived his father as having shown favoritism to his half-breed brother and a weakness for humans. On a moonlit night, a gravely injured Inu no Taisho tested Sesshomaru by asking if he had "someone to protect," and Sesshomaru's negative answer led to him being bequeathed the seemingly powerless Tenseiga. This act was not a punishment but a final lesson intended to teach his son compassion and true strength. His relationship with Izayoi, a human noblewoman, was one of genuine love. He left his first mate for her, and his final words to Izayoi were a desperate plea for her to live a long life with their son. For Inuyasha, born moments before his death, the father's role is a posthumous guide. He left him the Tetsusaiga, a sword that protects humans, knowing that his half-demon son would need such a bond to master his own demonic blood. The film provides a form of development for the Inu no Taisho’s legacy, as his two sons, who begin the film in bitter rivalry, ultimately come to understand his wisdom. By combining the powers of Tessaiga and Tenseiga to defeat So'unga, they fulfill their father's unspoken wish for them to find a way to work together, and they see his spirit thank them before he finally passes on.

Notably, the Inu no Taisho possessed a vast array of powerful abilities. As a great dog demon, his true form was that of a colossal dog skeleton, though he typically appeared in a human-like, armored form. His power was sufficient to create legendary swords from his own fangs, forged by the demon blacksmith Totosai. He wielded three swords with distinct powers: Tessaiga, an earthly sword that could slay a thousand demons; Tenseiga, a heavenly sword that could save a thousand lives, including resurrecting the recently deceased; and So'unga, a hellish sword that could open the gateway to the underworld. He was strong enough to fight and mortally wound a formidable dragon like Ryukotsusei, though the battle cost him his life. His power also extended to creating other mystical objects, such as the black pearl that serves as the gateway to his tomb and the Meido Stone he left with Sesshomaru's mother.
