Description
Leo (Lion-san) or Takano is a central figure in the anime Twin Spica, appearing primarily as a ghostly presence. In life, he was a young astronaut named Takano who perished in the crash of the Lion spacecraft, a catastrophic event that also claimed many other lives, including the mother of the protagonist, Asumi Kamogawa. He first meets Asumi on the day of her mother's funeral, introducing himself as a ghost and wearing a large, full-head lion mask that completely obscures his face. This mask gives rise to the nickname Lion-san by which Asumi knows him for much of the story.
As a spirit, Lion-san is benevolent, patient, and wise. He serves as a mentor and confidant to Asumi during the lonely, painful years following her mother's death. He consistently encourages her curiosity and fosters her growing fascination with space, ultimately inspiring her lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut. He speaks gently and with a calm authority, offering guidance without ever imposing his will. His own unfulfilled dream of reaching space becomes a powerful motivation for Asumi, who resolves to complete the journey he could not.
Lion-san is not a fully remembered being. In the anime, he experiences significant memory loss, recalling only fragments of his past. He knows he is a ghost tied to the rocket disaster, but key details of his life remain hazy. Over the course of the series, as Asumi grows and her own journey unfolds, Lion-san gradually recovers portions of his memory. He eventually remembers his name, Takano, and pieces of his personal history, including a brief romance during his youth with a young girl who would later be known as the first Marika Ukita, as well as a later relationship with Asumi's elementary school teacher, Yuko Suzunari. He gave Suzunari a small lion doll containing a wedding ring before his final flight, indicating a deep but unfinished bond.
His role in the story is primarily that of a guiding spirit and emotional anchor. He is the reason Asumi pursues her dream, and he supports her through failures, self-doubt, and the challenges of astronaut training. Only Asumi can see or hear him, which sets her apart from her peers and deepens her sense of solitude. He is a silent but constant presence throughout her childhood and adolescence, appearing at significant moments to offer comfort or perspective. His supernatural abilities are modest: he can jump unusually high, but he tires like a living person and shows no other overt powers. He cannot interact with the physical world beyond what a normal human could do while alive.
His key relationship is with Asumi, defined by a deep, quiet affection and mutual trust. He asks nothing of her but watches over her growth with what seems like pride. He also had a meaningful connection with Yuko Suzunari, and his relationship with the first Marika Ukita adds another layer of mystery and loss to his past. Near the very end of the anime, his presence becomes perceptible to others for the first time when Asumi's friends hear the sound of his harmonica. In the final scene, he removes his lion mask, revealing his face, silently bids Asumi farewell, and leaves his harmonica behind as a tangible keepsake before disappearing. This moment marks his completed role: he has guided her to the threshold of her own journey and can now let go.
