Description
Lion-san is the ghost of an astronaut who died in the explosion of the Lion rocket, the first crewed Japanese spaceflight mission that crashed into the town of Yuigahama. He first appears to Asumi Kamogawa on the day of her mother's funeral, wearing a large lion mask that covers his entire head and carrying a harmonica. His real name is Takano.

His personality is gentle, patient, and quietly sorrowful, carrying the weight of an unfulfilled dream. He speaks to Asumi with warmth and kindness, never forcing his own ambitions upon her but rather sharing them as a source of inspiration. He is enigmatic and often pensive, yet he displays a dry sense of humor and a soft, reassuring presence that makes him a pillar of comfort for Asumi during her moments of grief and doubt.

His primary motivation stems from his own lost opportunity to reach space. Unable to fulfill his dream in life, he finds purpose in nurturing Asumi's growing fascination with the stars. He wants her to succeed where he could not, and through her, he seeks a vicarious fulfillment of his lifelong goal. He also carries a lingering sense of responsibility and perhaps regret, which he channels into guiding her toward a future he will never have.

In the story, Lion-san serves as Asumi's spiritual mentor and the catalyst for her entire journey. He appears only to her and guides her from childhood through her years at the Tokyo Space School. He helps her scatter her mother's ashes, introduces her to the story of the star Spica as a metaphor for connection and resilience, and encourages her to strengthen herself both physically and mentally. His role is that of a quiet guardian and an invisible source of motivation who shapes her determination to become a rocket pilot.

His key relationships center on Asumi, with whom he shares a deep, almost familial bond built over years of secret companionship. Before his death, he had a romantic relationship with Yuko Suzunari, a schoolteacher to whom he gave a small lion doll containing a wedding ring. He also had a childhood friendship with the original Marika Ukita, a memory he eventually recovers. With Asumi's friends, he remains unseen and unheard for most of the series, though they eventually sense his presence at the end.

Lion-san's development is marked by a gradual recovery of his lost memories. He initially suffers from significant amnesia, remembering only fragments of his past. As the story progresses and Asumi grows, he regains pieces of his identity, including his connection to Yuko Suzunari and his childhood with Marika. This recovery allows him to find closure and ultimately prepares him to say goodbye. His arc moves from a disembodied figure of mystery to a fully realized person who comes to terms with his death.

His notable abilities are minor supernatural ones. He can appear and disappear at will, jump to great heights, and is visible only to Asumi for most of the series. He experiences fatigue like a living person and can interact with physical objects, such as playing his harmonica or handling Asumi's mother's ashes. His most significant ability is not physical but emotional: he possesses an uncanny talent for reaching Asumi at her most vulnerable moments, offering exactly the words she needs to hear to continue pursuing her dream.
