Description
Gunkan, also known as Captain Battleship in some adaptations, is a significant antagonist and rival from the anime Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. He holds the title of the first of the Maruhage Four Heavenly Kings, a group of elite warriors serving under the emperor Tsuru Tsurulina IV. His most defining characteristic is his status as the former friend and sworn rival of the protagonist, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo.

Gunkan shares the same unusual body type as his rival, characterized by a large, muscular upper body and notably thin legs. He has a distinctive appearance featuring a long, black ducktail hairstyle paired with a white beard. He typically wears a green version of Bobobo's outfit, complete with red leather pant straps over blue trousers and brown shoes. His birthday is recorded as March 17, and his blood type is O.

The foundation of Gunkan's character lies in his shared history with Bobobo within the Hair Kingdom. Both trained together in the sacred martial art of Hanage Shinken, the Fist of the Nose Hair, under a master who was a juice can. Despite Gunkan training harder and being stronger, the title of the Seventh Master was awarded to Bobobo because of his lineage as a citizen of the Hair Kingdom, a status Gunkan did not possess. This event crushed Gunkan's pride and sense of purpose, creating a deep-seated resentment that would define his life. When the Hair Kingdom was later attacked, Gunkan felt nothing and was glad it was destroyed, a reaction that enraged Bobobo and destroyed their friendship.

As a hajikelist, a practitioner of absurd combat, Gunkan's personality is as erratic and unpredictable as the series demands. He is often portrayed as sinister and manipulative, willing to exploit the weaknesses of others, such as using a character's affection for Beauty against them. He is a liar, frequently twisting the truth and fabricating stories about his past with Bobobo to suit his narrative. He has destroyed countless cities and shown a willingness to harm his own subordinates or hair hunters to achieve his goals. Despite these villainous traits, glimpses of a more sensitive and emotional side occasionally surface, as seen in his friendship with a creature named Flowerman. When Flowerman was killed by flower demons, Gunkan was filled with a rage that helped re-focus his hatred. At other times, his hajikelist nature manifests in purely comical ways, such as a complete lack of basic numerical knowledge or a tendency to blow up his own base.

Gunkan's primary motivation is revenge. He seeks to prove himself and repay Bobobo for what he sees as the theft of his rightful place as the master of the Fist of the Nose Hair. After leaving the Hair Kingdom, he joined the Maruhage Empire, not out of loyalty, but as a means to gain power and become the sworn enemy of everything Bobobo stood for. He worked his way up to become one of the Four Heavenly Kings, all while secretly plotting to eventually control the empire for himself. He leads a massive army of warriors from his personal floating fortress, the Pomade Ring, and is constantly seeking an opportunity to finally confront and defeat his old friend.

In the story, Gunkan serves as a major personal threat. While other enemies are obstacles, Gunkan is a direct challenge to Bobobo's past and his identity as a warrior. He orchestrates the plot that forces the main characters to invade his fortress, the Pomade Ring, by transforming Bobobo's companion Beauty into a doll and holding her hostage. This act sets the stage for a significant story arc where Bobobo and his allies must fight through Gunkan's elite warriors, the Gunkan's Five Great Warriors, to rescue her and face him.

Gunkan's development is largely rooted in his backstory and reveals a character twisted by pride and jealousy. While he remains a villain, his actions are consistently framed as a personal crusade rather than simple evil. He is a mirror to Bobobo, using a modified version of the same fighting style. One notable, albeit comedic, development is his ability to perform fusion, but unlike Bobobo's powerful combinations, Gunkan's fusion results in a completely pathetic and useless form.

Regarding notable abilities, Gunkan is a formidable fighter. He modified his training into his own style called the Garyu Hanage Shinken, which translates to the Customized Fist of the Nose Hair. This technique allows him to use his nose hairs as a primary weapon, but he has mastered it to such a degree that his large ducktail hairstyle can also be used offensively, capable of extending great distances and supporting heavy weight. Some of his specific attack techniques include Mermaid Lagoon, where he attacks with rolling nose hairs; Construction Fist, where he forces his opponent to help him build a house using another enemy as a brick; Bone Bone Going Fist, which drains the energy from a target until only their bones remain; and his ultimate super technique, Armageddon, which involves summoning the Earth Defense Forces via a telephone to fire lasers at his opponent.
