Shinichi Mechazawa is a student at Cromartie High School and one of its most notorious delinquents, yet he stands apart from his classmates in a fundamental way: he is a robot. Despite his mechanical nature, Mechazawa appears to believe that he is human, and only a few of the main characters, such as Takashi Kamiyama and Shinjiro Hayashida, seem to be aware of his true identity. The other students and the wider school generally treat him as an ordinary, if somewhat unusual, peer.
