Description
Bonnun is a minor antagonist who appears exclusively in the Sailor Moon SuperS Plus special episode titled Ami's First Love, as well as the manga side story upon which it is based. She is classified as a genius loci, which is a spirit intrinsically tied to a specific location. In her case, Bonnun has resided over a temple elementary school for approximately one hundred years. Her name is a play on the Buddhist term bonnou, which refers to earthly desires, worldly passions, or temptations that must be overcome, directly linking her nature to the intense, obsessive feelings she seeks to exploit.

In terms of physical appearance, Bonnun has a distinctive and colorful design. She has two large ponytails that are each as large as her body, with the left one being blonde and the right one purple. Her eyes are red, complemented by blue eyeshadow, and she has two small dots on her forehead. She wears a red bra-like garment connected to long, flowing orange sleeves. Her skirt consists of separate panels alternating in red and orange, and she completes her outfit with red heels that have long, pointed toes and pink curly earrings.

Bonnuns personality is somewhat contradictory. While she attempts to present herself as a menacing and threatening spirit, her efforts are largely ineffective and often met with confusion. She is easily flustered, especially when her intended victim, Ami Mizuno, completely ignores her grandiose declarations and mistakes her for someone else. Throughout her encounter with Sailor Mercury, Bonnun spends much of the time in a state of shock and bewilderment, unable to grasp why her plans are not unfolding as expected.

The primary motivation for Bonnun is to feed on the intense passions and desires of humans. She is drawn to Ami during a period of extreme stress, as Ami is relentlessly studying for high school entrance exams while competing against a mysterious academic rival named Mercurius. Observing Ami from a rooftop, Bonnun misinterprets Amis obsessive focus on her rival as romantic love and decides that Amis powerful feelings are the perfect source of nourishment for her. She proceeds to stalk Ami, believing she can consume these passions.

Bonnuns role in the story is that of a catalyst, serving as the physical manifestation of Amis internal struggles. She is not a major villain but a singular, episodic threat designed to test Ami in a very personal way. Her attack does not involve physical combat in a traditional sense; instead, she preys directly on Amis mind and knowledge. Bonnuns key ability is her so-called Love Letter Attack, during which she throws numerous magical love letters that stick to her victims face. The primary function of this attack, however, is to drain the victims knowledge. When used against Ami, bubbles containing all the information she has ever learned and memorized begin to float out of her head and pop, causing her to forget everything. This loss of knowledge represents Amis greatest fear, making Bonnun a psychological foe rather than a purely physical one.

The key relationship in Bonnuns brief existence is entirely with Ami Mizuno. Bonnun views Ami as nothing more than a source of food, while Ami, in her delirious and exhausted state, completely misidentifies Bonnun. Throughout their confrontation, Ami is convinced that Bonnun is actually her rival, Mercurius, attempting to sabotage her. Bonnuns repeated attempts to correct this misunderstanding are futile, as Ami refuses to listen. This lack of recognition is a defining and somewhat comedic aspect of their dynamic. Other characters, such as Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibiusa, arrive to help, but they are largely powerless to intervene as Bonnuns attack is directed entirely at Amis mind.

Bonnun experiences no personal development, as she is a one-off character created to be defeated. Her arc begins with her awakening and deciding to feed on Ami and ends with her destruction. However, her presence forces a form of development in Ami, who ultimately overcomes the spirit not through academic prowess, but by transforming into Sailor Mercury and using her attack, Mercury Aqua Mirage. Ami destroys Bonnun while still believing she is vanquishing Mercurius, demonstrating that her inner strength as a Sailor Guardian can overcome the external pressures and anxieties that Bonnun represents. After her defeat, Bonnun does not return, making her a unique and isolated menace within the Sailor Moon anime canon.
