Description
Professor Namba, also known as Dr. Namba, is a recurring antagonist in the Pokémon anime, including the spin-off series Pokémon Chronicles, where he operates as a senior scientist within the criminal organization Team Rocket. He holds a high-ranking position in the group's research division and acts as the direct superior of the Rocket agents Butch and Cassidy, assigning them missions, supplying them with experimental technology, and monitoring their progress from his hidden base.

In terms of background, Namba was originally a gifted researcher with many scientific achievements, but his preference for unethical and morally questionable work led him to join Team Rocket, which sought out capable scientists and gave him the freedom to pursue such experiments. He works almost entirely behind the scenes in the anime, usually appearing as a face on a video screen or through voice communication rather than in person, and much of his activity remains covert.

Namba's personality is defined by pride, arrogance, and a very short temper. He becomes furious whenever someone mispronounces his name, a recurring comedic trait in which characters call him "Professor Bamba," "Samba," "Mambo," or other variations before he angrily insists on the correct form. He is highly intelligent, cunning, creative, and technologically skilled, and he is also a capable Pokémon trainer. At the same time, he is power-hungry, megalomaniacal, cruel, ruthless, and authoritarian. He holds a deeply prejudiced worldview, openly stating that Pokémon exist only to serve humanity and that humans are the chosen species, a belief he expresses without hesitation even while holding captives.

His motivations center on the pursuit of power and the advancement of his experiments. Namba believes that Pokémon reveal their full strength only when driven by rage, and much of his research is dedicated to provoking and harnessing that anger. He also refers to a secret undertaking called the R Project, for which he orders the capture of rare and powerful Pokémon.

In the story, Namba's most prominent role comes as the main antagonist of the Lugia saga, in which he captures a baby Lugia in order to lure its parent, intending to measure the legendary Pokémon's fury using his equipment and turn it into a weapon. He detains Ash and his friends to prevent interference, but his scheme ultimately fails. In Pokémon Chronicles, he appears mainly as a mission coordinator who briefs Butch and Cassidy from a distance, and he features directly in storylines such as the abduction of Professor Oak.

His key relationships are with Butch and Cassidy, who serve as his primary field agents and carry out his capture missions using his inventions. Their interactions are marked by frequent miscommunication and his habit of angrily calling to correct them when they say his name wrong. He also gives orders to other Team Rocket operatives on occasion, including Jessie and James. His own Pokémon include an Electabuzz, which he equips with his rage-inducing device during a confrontation with Ash and his companions.

Namba shows little development across his appearances. His origins are never fully explained, and he does not change his methods or beliefs despite repeated failures. He continues to devise larger and more ambitious plans, all of which are ultimately thwarted.

His notable abilities lie in science and invention. His signature creation is the Pokémon Anger Device, a mechanical crown-like headpiece that forces a Pokémon into a state of intense rage, dramatically increasing its combat power; he and his agents use it on Pokémon such as Houndour, Hitmontop, and his own Electabuzz. He has also researched the Pokérus virus and the properties of Hippowdon's sand, developed weapons for Team Rocket, and built remote controls and monitoring systems for his experiments. In battle, he relies on his trained Electabuzz and his technological gadgets rather than direct confrontation.
