Description
Kenji, known in English-language versions as Tracey Sketchit, is a character who first appears during the Orange Islands arc of the Pokémon anime and continues to appear in Pokémon Chronicles. His Japanese name is Kenji. Kenji hails from the Orange Archipelago, though his specific hometown within the islands is not detailed.

Kenji's core identity is that of a Pokémon Watcher. This profession involves observing Pokémon in their natural habitats, studying their behavior, and documenting findings through sketches. His approach to this role is deeply artistic; he is a dedicated and skilled artist who is compelled to draw the Pokémon he encounters, often stopping to capture a scene even when circumstances are urgent or dangerous. This passion for observation gives him a broad and practical knowledge of Pokémon, allowing him to assess a creature's health or training level at a single glance.

In terms of personality, Kenji is generally reserved, gentle, and self-conscious. He has a polite and well-mannered demeanor, which contrasts with the more exuberant personalities of some other traveling companions. Like his predecessor Brock, Kenji has a soft spot for attractive women, including Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy. However, he expresses this interest in a much more subdued way, typically by sketching them in his notebook rather than pursuing them openly. He is also known to have difficulty refusing requests for help, a trait that others sometimes rely on.

Kenji's primary motivation is his deep admiration for Professor Oak, a leading Pokémon researcher. This hero worship is a defining aspect of his character. He decides to travel with Ash Ketchum and Misty after learning of their connection to Professor Oak, hoping to learn more about his idol. During their journey through the Orange Islands, Kenji serves as a knowledgeable and steady companion, using his observational skills to help the group on multiple occasions. After this journey concludes, he realizes his dream by relocating to Pallet Town to become Professor Oak's official live-in assistant.

Within Pokémon Chronicles, Kenji's role is firmly established as Professor Oak's assistant at his laboratory in Pallet Town. He appears in several episodes, often helping to protect the lab from threats like the Team Rocket members Butch and Cassidy. He also teams up with other characters, such as the trainer Ritchie, to rescue Professor Oak when he is kidnapped. Additionally, Kenji maintains his friendships from his traveling days, occasionally visiting Misty at the Cerulean City Gym. His significant relationship with Professor Oak has evolved from fan and assistant to a trusted partnership in research and Pokémon care. Among the Pokémon living at the lab, he is noted to have a particular bond with Ash’s Bulbasaur.

Kenji has several notable abilities. His most prominent skill is his rapid and accurate sketching, which he uses as a primary tool for his research. His keen observational skills allow him to diagnose a Pokémon's condition or identify subtle details that others might miss. He is also a capable, if not flashy, Pokémon trainer. His known Pokémon include a Venonat that later evolves into Venomoth, a Marill, and a Scyther he rescued and befriended. The Marill he owns is notable for later producing an egg, which he gives to Misty, and it hatches into her Azurill.
