Description
Mikiyasu Shinjo is a former Japanese professional golfer who once achieved a notable victory at the Arizona Phoenix Open, defeating a top competitor such as Greg Norman or the fictional pro Jimmy McGray. This triumph occurred approximately a year and seven months before the events of the story. His promising career came to an abrupt halt after a serious car accident left him physically unable to swing a golf club, forcing him into early retirement. This physical limitation and the loss of his professional life shape his personality, initially making him a bitter and somewhat envious individual. He envies the young protagonist, Tadamichi Aoba, nicknamed Dandoh, for having loyal friends who support him. This envy, however, evolves into motivation when Dandoh, Yuka, and Kohei demonstrate their determination and patience in pursuing golf. Shinjo agrees to teach them, becoming their mentor and guide. He believes that despite their youth, they have the potential to surpass even his former skills. Through his coaching, he passes on his technical knowledge and strategic understanding of the game, serving as a crucial catalyst for their development. In the later sequel, Dan Doh! Next Generation, Shinjo dies while planning a major global golf tournament, a testament to his lasting passion for the sport and his desire to leave a legacy. His key relationships are with the three children he trains, particularly Dandoh, whose talent and camaraderie reignite Shinjo’s own love for golf.
