Description
Alférez Kururu, also known as Sergeant Major Kururu, is a key member of the Keroro Platoon, where he serves as the operational communication officer and staff officer, effectively acting as the brains of the unit. His rank is notably one step higher than that of the platoon leader, Keroro, though he was originally a major before being demoted for hacking into the Keron Army's network out of boredom. He is easily recognized by his yellow skin, round glasses with spiral patterns, and the red spiral insignia on his stomach.
His distinctive yellow skin is not natural; it is the result of an incident during his youth. As a tadpole, he fell into a large pot of curry prepared by Keroro, and this event permanently dyed his skin from its original light blue to its current curry yellow hue. This event also contributed to his later personality and his deep, abiding love for curry.
Personality-wise, Alférez Kururu is defined by his twisted, mischievous, and enigmatic nature. He takes great pleasure in creating trouble for others and is often described as a mad scientist figure. His signature high-pitched laugh, usually rendered as kukuku, reflects his penchant for ridiculing the world around him. He is an efficient and highly intelligent individual, but he lacks empathy and often displays cruel, sadistic tendencies in his pranks. His behavior includes voyeurism, selling personal items of his human acquaintances, and psychological manipulation, which leads most other characters to view him as a depressing jerk. He finds relaxation in terrible sounds, like nails on a chalkboard, and when his emotions are strained, the lenses of his glasses are known to crack. Despite this unpleasant demeanor, he is proud of his personality and has no desire to change, often responding to requests for help with a dismissive attitude, though he typically provides the requested aid after some torment.
His motivations often appear selfish, driven by a desire for amusement and the opportunity to test his inventions on unsuspecting subjects. However, his role in the story is crucial to the Keroro Platoon. He is the team's technical expert and inventor, responsible for creating nearly all of the gadgets, mecha, and unrealistic tools used in their schemes, whether for invasion or other purposes. The other platoon members, including Keroro, frequently rely on his intellect and inventions, even if they are personally wary of him.
Key relationships define his interactions. His relationship with the platoon leader, Keroro, is one of mutual use; Keroro tolerates Kururu's antics to get his inventions, while Kururu generally follows Keroro's orders, even if he does so with a mocking attitude. Among the humans, his only true partner and someone he can relate to is Mutsumi Hojo, also known as Saburo, with whom he shares a connection through the radio world. He has a noted rivalry or source of irritation with the character Angol Moa. He is also known to enjoy exploiting the weaknesses of his comrades, such as Giroro's feelings for Natsumi Hinata, for his own amusement.
The character's development is minimal, as he remains a consistently insidious and competent figure. In the anime adaptation, his unpleasant traits were amplified in a way that made him a popular character, a reversal of his more straightforwardly unlikable portrayal in the original manga. Flashback episodes reveal that his current personality was largely shaped by the actions of a young Keroro and Giroro, solidifying his role as a troublemaker. While he appears to enjoy chaos, episodes have shown that he is not entirely without wisdom, and at his core, he does care for his friends, though his practical jokes are often taken to extremes.
Alférez Kururu's notable abilities are almost entirely technological. He is a prodigy in mecha production and engineering, capable of building devices with a wide range of functions. His inventions can be both convenient and extremely dangerous. His headphones are a multipurpose tool that can connect to any machine, erase memories, and emit ultrasonic waves. He has created pens that materialize drawings, guns that transform animals into people, and devices that can reverse aging. His personal laboratory and office, Kururu's Lab, is even designed to mimic his own face.
