Description
Alisa Southerncross is a recurring character in the Keroro Gunsou universe, known in English as Sgt. Frog. Her background is steeped in mystery and the supernatural. She was originally a life-sized Western doll, created by an unknown maker around the year 1566, which somehow developed human emotions and consciousness. For centuries, she wandered, often appearing to protect children from dark creatures before disappearing back into the shadows. Her existence is that of an artificial being, referred to as a doll or an undead entity, rather than a born human.
Physically, Alisa appears to be a young teenager, around 14 or 15 years old, though her true age is over a century. She has a petite build, standing 155 centimeters tall and weighing 41 kilograms. Her most distinctive features are her orange-red hair, typically tied back into pigtails with blue beads, and her sharp, devilish red eyes. Her wardrobe is usually simple and old-fashioned, often consisting of a grey blouse, a dark skirt, and black hosiery, which contributes to her anachronistic appearance. A constant part of her look is the black cat-ear headband she wears, which is not merely an accessory but a living entity named Nebula, whom she calls Daddy.
Alisa’s personality is defined by a stark contrast between her reserved exterior and her blunt, demanding nature. At first glance, she appears silent, distant, and expressionless, rarely showing emotion. However, this stoicism masks a profound difficulty in understanding and expressing feelings, a consequence of her not being entirely human. She is straightforward and can be quite forceful, famously dragging the main character Fuyuki Hinata to remote locations without explanation. This behavior stems from a childlike awkwardness rather than malice; she struggles with simple social cues, common sense, and expressing positive emotions. For instance, when trying to say she likes someone, her expression may resemble a death glare, and she has to learn how to perform even a simple smile.
Her primary motivation is to become a true human being. To achieve this, she and Nebula hunt and consume beings collectively known as the Dark Race, a broad category that includes aliens, ghosts, demons, cryptids, and other supernatural entities. This mission is her entire purpose, guided by Nebula, who found her and decided that giving her humanity was his reason for living. While her initial interest in Fuyuki is practical—believing his unique ability to attract occult phenomena will help her find more prey—she gradually develops genuine feelings for him, marking a significant step in her own emotional development.
In the story, Alisa serves as a major recurring antagonist and later an ally, often appearing randomly to disrupt the status quo. She is one of the Four Winds that surround the Hinata family, representing the south, and is the only one without a direct partner among the Keroro Platoon. Her role typically involves hunting Dark Race creatures, which often puts her in conflict with or in temporary alliance with the platoon. Her most significant actions involve her relationship with Fuyuki Hinata, whom she has declared as her own property and frequently kidnaps to take on her hunts, much to the jealousy of another character, Momoka Nishizawa.
Her key relationships define her character arc. The most important is with Nebula, the shape-shifting alien who resides on her head. He acts as her devoted father, her primary source of combat ability, and her moral compass, though his methods are often as blunt as hers. Her relationship with Fuyuki is the catalyst for her emotional growth. While she first sees him as a tool to attract prey, she grows to care for him genuinely, willing to put herself in danger for his sake. Fuyuki, for his part, is often terrified but also shows her kindness, and he is always able to detect her presence by the distinct scent of the Osmanthus flower that follows her.
Throughout her appearances, Alisa shows subtle but clear development. She transitions from a purely pragmatic hunter who captures anything she deems prey to someone who can show restraint and even empathy. In later episodes, she willingly releases creatures that remind her of herself, such as humanoids born from the Antarctic, and shows signs of learning to be more gentle in her interactions with others. She begins to smile more often and learns to navigate her feelings for Fuyuki in ways beyond simply abducting him.
Alisa’s notable abilities are almost entirely derived from Nebula, who takes the form of her cat-ear headband. Without him, she is completely powerless. Nebula is an incredibly versatile weapon that can shapeshift into anything Alisa requires, such as wings for flight, claws for combat, or even a swimsuit for underwater battles. He possesses immense strength, enough to easily overpower the entire Keroro Platoon. Furthermore, Alisa has a unique petrifying gaze similar to the Gorgon Medusa; anyone who meets her eyes directly can be turned to stone. This ability is one of her most dangerous assets, though it can be reflected back at her, such as with a mirror.
