Description
Dino Sparks is a central character in Legendz: Yomigaeru Ryūō Densetsu, known as the Saga of Fire. He is a young boy of about eleven years old who attends Brooklyn Second Elementary School. He is immediately recognizable by his trademark red hat and his habit of always carrying a rose with him, which he wears on his collar. As the heir to a massive fortune, he lives in a grand mansion attended by numerous servants, but this privileged existence masks a deep personal loneliness.
Outwardly, Dino Sparks is the picture of a princely prodigy. He is a multi-talented genius, excelling in sports like baseball, playing the piano with great skill, and performing well in his studies. He maintains a proud and calm demeanor and is extremely popular with students from his own school and others. However, this flawless exterior conceals a much more fragile and unhappy interior. He is a sensitive, delicate, and self-deprecating boy who secretly believes he is a boring and worthless person. The source of his profound unhappiness is his family. He is deeply bitter toward his father, the president of a major toy company, whom he accuses of driving his mother away from home. Dino views his father as a man who can only make money by copying the ideas of others and has created a "fake life" with nothing of genuine substance. Consequently, Dino feels he is just an imitator himself, unable to create anything original, and he fears that he and his father will one day be abandoned just like one of their counterfeit toys.
Dino’s motivations are driven by his search for authenticity and a real connection, which he finds missing in his gilded life. He longs for the mother who left and resents his father for his absence, as they see each other only once every ten days. His role in the story begins as a rival to the main protagonist, but this changes when he forms a genuine friendship with another character, Mark. Through simple, warm interactions—such as sharing hamburgers and showing Mark a rose he planted—Dino begins to open up. His emotional breakthrough occurs when he is chosen by a fire dragon named Greedo, also known as Grid the Blazedragon. After a battle, the dragon refuses to obey its previous summoner and instead responds to Dino's rose, which transforms into a Talispod, designating Dino as the true Saga of Fire.
His key relationship is with his partner Legendz, Greedo, who becomes his true friend and loyal companion. Another pivotal relationship is with Mark, who represents Dino’s first real, unconditional friendship. Through these connections, Dino undergoes significant development. He gradually resolves his misunderstandings with his father, learning that his father’s coldness stemmed from a misguided attempt to provide for him. By confronting his feelings of abandonment and his self-hatred for living a "fake life," Dino grows into a more confident and reliable individual. As the Saga of Fire, his notable ability is his command over fire-based powers in conjunction with his Legendz partner, Greedo.
