Description
Musashi Miyamoto is a central figure in the Baki series, first appearing as the main antagonist of the Baki-Dou story arc. He is the legendary samurai of the Edo period, widely considered the strongest swordsman of his era. In the narrative, he is brought back to life in the modern day through a mysterious blend of scientific cloning and spiritual mediumship, orchestrated by the underground arena's organizer, Mitsunari Tokugawa. This resurrection is intended to give the world's greatest living fighters a chance to face the ultimate warrior from history.

Musashi's background is that of a masterless ronin who traveled across feudal Japan dueling and serving various warlords before founding his own school of swordsmanship, the Niten Ichi-ryu. He died of illness at the age of 61, but his undefeated record in life remains intact. In the modern world, he retains all of his skills and experience, but he is utterly disconnected from contemporary society. He is a man out of time, and his worldview is shaped entirely by the code of the samurai and the pursuit of ultimate martial glory.

Personality wise, Musashi is straightforward, calm, and intensely focused on combat as a form of art and self-expression. He is not malicious in a petty sense, but he is utterly cold and pragmatic when it comes to fighting, viewing opponents merely as obstacles to test his own supremacy. He displays no attachment to life or death, his own or others', and he operates with the detached confidence of someone who has never been bested. He is also deeply ambitious, seeking to reclaim the fame and recognition he once had, and he treats each fight as a chance to prove his legend is not exaggerated.

His primary motivation is to re-establish himself as the strongest warrior that ever lived. He does not care about the rules or ethics of modern fighting; he only cares about the reality of combat. This drive leads him to challenge and defeat many of the series' top martial artists, including Gouki Shibukawa, Doppo Orochi, and Kaioh Retsu, whom he kills in cold blood. His presence shakes the underground fighting world to its core, as no one can match his speed, precision, or lethal intent.

In the story, Musashi serves as the ultimate test for the main cast, particularly for Baki Hanma and Yujiro Hanma. His arrival forces everyone to reevaluate what true strength means. His role is that of an invincible obstacle that even the most seasoned warriors cannot overcome, and his actions create a cascade of psychological and physical challenges that push the other characters to their limits. He also earns the respect of Yujiro, the series' strongest being, who acknowledges Musashi as a legitimate threat and equal in terms of fighting spirit.

Key relationships include his rivalry with Baki Hanma, who is fascinated by Musashi and even named his dog after him. Their first encounter ends with Musashi effortlessly defeating Baki, but Baki later trains to close the gap. His relationship with Yujiro is one of mutual recognition; Yujiro does not dismiss him as he does most others, and their eventual confrontation is a clash of two unparalleled forces. He also has a brief but brutal encounter with Kaioh Retsu, which results in Retsu's death and marks a turning point in the arc, demonstrating that Musashi is willing to kill without hesitation. There is no friendship or alliance for Musashi; he interacts with others solely through combat.

Development over the course of the series is minimal for Musashi himself, as he is already a fully realized, static force. The change comes in how others perceive him and how they adapt. However, in his final fight with Baki, there is a slight shift as Musashi begins to acknowledge the growth of his opponents. Yet he remains unchanged in his core nature.

Notable abilities stem from his legendary swordsmanship. He wields two swords in the Niten Ichi-ryu style, allowing simultaneous offense and defense. His most famous technique is the Imitation Cut, a mental slash that tricks the opponent's brain into believing they have been cut, causing real physical shock and even unconsciousness. He can also perform actual superhumanly fast and precise cuts with real blades. His body is incredibly durable, able to withstand powerful blows from fighters like Retsu and his whip. He has an extremely high tolerance for pain. His senses are so sharp that he can anticipate attacks and read opponents' intentions with near-supernatural accuracy. He also possesses a form of aura or presence that intimidates even seasoned fighters, and his sheer combat intuition allows him to adapt instantly to any fighting style. He does not rely on brute strength like many other Baki characters, but on perfect technique, timing, and an unshakable will to kill.
