Movie
Description
Muten, also known as Master Roshi, is the legendary Turtle Hermit and a martial arts master who lives on a small island called Kame House. He is an elderly man with a bald head, a long white beard, and a distinctive turtle shell on his back. His appearance is deceptively frail, but he possesses immense strength and skill accumulated over centuries of training.

His personality is marked by a playful and perverted side, which often manifests in his obsession with young women and risqué television programs. He is easily swayed by bribes of erotic magazines, as seen when Krillin uses this tactic to persuade him to consider taking on students. Despite this frivolous demeanor, Muten is wise and serious about martial arts, respecting the discipline and tradition of the Turtle School. He holds high expectations for those who seek his training and believes in testing their worth through meaningful trials.

In the story of the second Dragon Ball movie, Muten serves as the catalyst for the adventure. When Goku and Krillin each come to him hoping to become his students, he refuses outright but eventually agrees to a test: whoever retrieves the Sleeping Princess from Devil’s Castle will be accepted. This challenge is designed not only to gauge their martial abilities but also their courage, cleverness, and perseverance. He remains at Kame House throughout the quest, later informing Bulma and her friends about the boys’ destination when they come looking for Goku. At the story’s conclusion, he accepts both boys as his students, treating the returned Launch—mistaken for the Sleeping Princess—as proof that they passed the test. His decision reflects his pragmatic and somewhat opportunistic nature.

Muten’s key relationships in the film are with Goku and Krillin, whom he views as raw but promising pupils. He also interacts briefly with Bulma, Yamcha, Oolong, and Puar, but his focus remains on the two boys. There is no significant development for Muten’s character within the movie; he appears as a static, established figure whose role is to set the plot in motion and provide a goal.

His notable abilities include mastery of the Turtle School martial arts style, which emphasizes disciplined techniques such as the Kamehameha wave. While he does not fight directly in this film, his reputation as a formidable warrior is well known. He also possesses deep knowledge of ki control and combat strategy, and his physical condition, despite his age, allows him to perform feats of superhuman strength and endurance.
