Description
Miroir Magique is a magical object central to the anime The Legend of Snow White. It is a large, ornate wall-mounted mirror that houses an imprisoned spirit named Spek. The origins of both the mirror and the spirit are initially mysterious, but it is established that Spek is bound to the mirror and is compelled to answer any question truthfully whenever he is summoned. The mirror serves as a tool of the Evil Queen Crystal, who consults it frequently to determine who is the fairest in the land. Spek always answers with absolute honesty, and when he reveals that Snow White has surpassed the Queen in beauty, it sparks the Queen's jealousy and drives the central conflict of the story. The spirit has a cryptic, sometimes ominous manner of speaking, and his truthfulness is a defining trait; he cannot lie or refuse to answer. His motivations are not his own, as he is a slave to the mirror's enchantment and must obey the Queen's summons. As the series progresses, it is revealed that Spek is not merely a passive informant but a deeply malevolent entity. He is the evil spirit who has secretly controlled Queen Crystal since her childhood, manipulating her thoughts and actions to carry out his own dark will. His ultimate goal is to use the Queen to eliminate Snow White and presumably to gain power or freedom. The mirror's role in the story is therefore twofold: it is both an instrument of the Queen's vanity and a vessel for the true antagonist. Key relationships include his bond with Queen Crystal, whom he dominates and corrupts, and his adversarial connection to Snow White and Prince Richard. Throughout the series, the spirit's influence grows more pronounced, and he eventually attempts to transfer the Queen's soul into Snow White's body to achieve immortality and beauty. In the climax, Prince Richard confronts the spirit directly and defeats him by harnessing the power of the four elements, freeing Queen Crystal from Spek's control and rendering the mirror a harmless object. Notable abilities include the mirror's capacity to show distant locations and people, to speak in verse, and to exert psychic influence over those who use it. Spek can also manifest his will beyond the mirror, possessing and controlling individuals, particularly the Queen. The mirror's magical properties are tied to truth-telling, but its deeper power lies in its ability to corrupt and enslave those who rely on it.
