Description
Crystal is the primary antagonist of the 1994 anime series The Legend of Snow White. She is the stepmother of Snow White, having married the girl's father, King Conrad, after the death of his first wife. As the Queen of the kingdom, she holds a position of great power and authority.
Beneath her royal exterior, Crystal possesses a deeply cruel and envious personality. Her defining trait is an obsessive desire to be the most beautiful woman in the world, and she becomes consumed by jealousy over Snow White's youth and beauty. This jealousy is the primary engine for her actions throughout the story, as she cannot tolerate any rival to her own vanity. Her true malevolent nature is revealed almost immediately after her husband departs for the battlefield, demonstrating that her former demeanor was a deceptive mask.
Crystal's primary motivation is to eliminate Snow White. She is relentless in pursuing this goal, employing various cunning tricks and magical plots to track down the princess and ensure her demise. However, the narrative provides a supernatural context for her villainy. It is revealed that a Devil possessed Crystal when she was a child, and this entity ultimately desires to claim Snow White's body for itself. This backstory suggests that while her evil actions are her own, they are also fueled and manipulated by a greater demonic force.
Her key relationship is, of course, with her stepdaughter, Snow White. She does not have a maternal bond with the girl but views her solely as a threat and an obstacle. Her husband, King Conrad, is another significant figure in her life, but his absence enables her to freely act on her malicious intentions. She holds no other meaningful allies, instead commanding servants like the huntsman to do her bidding, though even they may defy her orders when their own conscience intervenes.
Crystal does not undergo a significant positive development or redemption. She remains the story's definitive antagonist, consistently driving the conflict forward with her schemes. Her possession by the Devil adds a layer of tragic backstory, but it does not lessen her culpability for the cruelty she inflicts upon Snow White. Her role in the story is therefore a classic one: the jealous and powerful queen whose sole purpose is to threaten the innocent heroine, forcing Snow White to flee her home and begin her journey.
In terms of abilities, Crystal is depicted as a cruel witch who is endowed with magical powers. She uses these abilities to further her plots against Snow White, enabling her to cast spells, create magical disguises, and track her stepdaughter from afar. While the full scope of her magical knowledge is not detailed, it is potent enough to make her a formidable and persistent threat to the princess and her companions.
