Description
Dr. Eggman, whose full name is Dr. Ivo Robotnik, is the primary antagonist of the anime Sonic X. His origin story is unique to this version of the character. He was born on Earth, but as a baby, he was somehow transported to an alternate dimension, the world where Sonic and his friends originally lived. He grew up there to become a mad scientist bent on world domination. During an attempt to use the seven Chaos Emeralds in a new weapon, a malfunction caused a Chaos Control event that teleported him, his entire base, and several of Sonic's friends back to his birth world, Earth. Upon arriving on Earth, he immediately resumed his lifelong ambition of conquering the planet.

In Sonic X, Dr. Eggman is characterized by a massive ego and a flamboyant, attention-seeking personality. He is incredibly arrogant and wants to be admired and adored by everyone, dreaming of building his Eggman Empire. His schemes are often designed not just for conquest, but also to allow him to show off and be the center of attention. A notable example is when he adopted the wrestling persona of El Gran Gordo, not for any world-conquering purpose, but simply because he loved the applause and being a hero. Despite his love for money to fund his robot-building, he is often confused by the high value placed on "little green slips of paper". Beneath his cruel and cold-hearted exterior as a scientist, there is a small spark of decency. He generally believes that while taking hostages and threatening them is acceptable, actually harming them crosses a line. He does not want to destroy the world, as he would have nothing left to rule.

Eggman's primary motivation is universal domination and the establishment of his Eggman Empire. He is driven by a desire for power and recognition, believing himself to be the supreme genius. Throughout the first two seasons of Sonic X, his role is to create increasingly elaborate schemes to take over Earth, usually involving giant robots, new weapons, or leveraging the power of the Chaos Emeralds. He also acts as a catalyst for major story arcs, such as when he discovered the secrets of Project Shadow and unleashed Shadow the Hedgehog. In the third season, his role shifts as a new alien threat, the Metarex, emerges. His ambition leads him to initially join the Metarex to gain their technology, but he is later betrayed and ultimately becomes a reluctant and temporary ally to Sonic and his friends for the remainder of the series.

His most significant relationship is with his arch-nemesis, Sonic the Hedgehog. This rivalry is extremely complex, often shifting between mortal enmity and a light-hearted, friendly rivalry. He hates being thwarted by Sonic, yet he holds a certain respect for the hedgehog's abilities. There are several moments that show a deeper layer to this relationship, such as when Eggman could not bear to watch his robot brutally beat Sonic and ordered it to stop, or when he personally saved an unconscious Sonic on a beach. He is also known for his deceitful relationship with Knuckles the Echidna, frequently tricking the guardian into believing lies to get him to fight Sonic. Other key relationships are with his own henchmen. He is primarily aided by his two robotic sidekicks, Decoe and Bocoe, and his impish messenger robot, Bokkun. Despite creating them, Eggman frequently treats them poorly, but he also seems to view them as companions and feels upset when they turn against him.

Over the course of the series, Dr. Eggman shows a notable development. While he begins as a straightforward and comical villain, his character is given more depth, particularly during the second season. His discovery that he was born on Earth and that his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, lived and died there, adds a personal dimension to his conquest. Perhaps the most significant change is in the third season, where his role as the main villain is supplanted by the Metarex. In response to this greater threat, he sets aside his rivalry and works alongside his greatest enemy, Sonic, to save the universe. This arc demonstrates that while his ego remains intact, his self-preservation and a pragmatic understanding of greater evils can lead to him becoming an unlikely hero.

Dr. Eggman boasts an extremely high IQ which he uses to construct an endless variety of robots, flying fortresses, and high-tech weapons. His primary mode of transportation and combat is the Egg Mobile, a small, egg-shaped flying vehicle that is armed with various weapons. He is also surprisingly resilient, capable of surviving huge explosions and multiple direct hits from powerful attacks and emerging with little to no injury. In Sonic X, he has also displayed some unexpected skills. During his time as El Gran Gordo, he demonstrated proficient combat ability, holding his own against Sonic himself. This same storyline also showed him to be a skilled and creative tailor, given his extensive collection of disguises. His intelligence also allows him to create and adapt complex strategies on the fly, though they are almost always undone by his own arrogance or by Sonic's intervention.
