Description
Nū is one of the two central characters of the anime, a small monster who appears on the night before the Millennial Fair celebrating the thousand-year anniversary of the Kingdom of Guardia. At that time, the fairgrounds are overtaken by a festive gathering of monsters arriving through portals, and Nū joins them as an eager participant. Alongside his companion Mamo, a round, doll-like creature, he is determined to start his own adventure across time and space, and the pair attempt to recruit new members for their group called Nuumamonjaa.
In terms of personality, Nū is enthusiastic, impulsive, and not especially clever. The duo are described as lacking in brains, so their good intentions quickly spiral into one mishap after another. Nū acts on impulse without thinking through the consequences, and his boundless energy repeatedly drags him and Mamo into chaotic situations. His motivation is straightforward: he craves excitement and treats the monster-filled fair as the perfect launching point for an adventure, even though his plans rarely work out as intended.
His role in the story is that of a co-protagonist and the driving force behind much of the comedy. He interrupts the show of the robot Johnny, enters a drinking contest and wins a golden shovel with the help of a controller resembling a Super Famicom pad, and later stumbles upon the combat robot Gonzalez, who activates and chases the pair. When he and Mamo end up clinging to Gonzalez's back during a wild, out-of-control race against Johnny, Nū presses a large button on Gonzalez, causing a boxing glove to spring out and knock Johnny away. The chase only ends in the morning, when Gonzalez runs out of power and collapses, and Nū and Mamo then appear in the credits parodying scenes from the game world.
His key relationships are with Mamo, his loyal partner and fellow member of the Nuumamonjaa group, and with Johnny, who acts as the pair's rival and the self-styled champion of the monster festival's races. Gonzalez functions more as an obstacle than an ally, a machine set loose by Nū's interference. Development is limited, since the story is a short comedic piece rather than a character drama; Nū does not undergo any significant change, but instead spends the night causing trouble, surviving the consequences of his own actions, and returning to the fairgrounds as dawn breaks. Notable abilities shown include his unexpected talent for winning the drinking contest, his resourcefulness with improvised objects such as the game controller and the button on Gonzalez's back, and his background as a creature of the same species as the magical Nu monsters of the game setting.
