Description
Ken Kurenai is the main protagonist and the designated pilot of the titular super robot, Red Baron, in his series. He is a young man of 18 years who carries a significant personal tragedy, as his parents and younger brother were kidnapped by a hostile organization known as the Iron Party four years before the story begins; his brother was killed in front of him during this event, leaving him entirely alone. In the aftermath, he worked as a live-in repairman at an automobile factory before later becoming a full member of the organization fighting against the Iron Party.
Despite this painful background, Ken is characterized as a hot-blooded, good-looking young man with an abundance of courage and kindness, refusing to be discouraged by his past. He tends to act silly or lighthearted for much of the time, but when a serious situation demands it, he can become highly logical and focused. His primary motivation throughout the series is to become the champion of the Metal Fight, a globally popular televised competition where robot contestants battle for the title of the world's best Metal Fighter. He pilots the Red Baron with this specific goal in mind.
His key relationships include his teammate Shouko Saeba, the creator and engineer of Red Baron, for whom he has a secret crush. Their first meeting was marked by a comedic misunderstanding, as Ken initially thought Shouko was a boy, leading her to kick him between the legs in the first episode. He also often butts heads with Robby, Shouko's robot companion. A significant figure from his past is his childhood rival, Shadow. Both Ken and Shadow trained in Muay Thai together from a young age, which forged an early and enduring rivalry between them.
Throughout the story, Ken demonstrates a notable development as a pilot and fighter. He is a great strategist in battle, possessing the ability to see through his enemies' techniques and identify their weak points. His defining trait as a combatant is his unyielding fighting spirit; he never gives up, even when his robot has sustained grievous injuries, such as having an arm torn off or a critical cooling device ripped from its chest. This relentless determination allows him to overcome the most difficult fights, and he is even able to channel his own spiritual energy to grant the Red Baron a tremendous power boost. Adding an air of mystery to his character, it is suggested that his name, Ken Kurenai, might be an alias he adopts at the start of his journey, as the Japanese word "kurenai" can mean "crimson" or "rose," which are elements present in the first episode when he introduces himself.
