Description
Kougaiji is a demon prince introduced in the anime Saiyuki Reload as a major opponent of the Sanzo party. He is the son of Gyumaoh, the Ox King, and Ratsetsunyo, and he makes his home in Houtou Castle in India. Over five hundred years old but physically appearing around nineteen, he is forced to serve his stepmother Gyokumen Koushu, a woman he deeply resents, because she has promised to revive his mother, who was cursed and turned into stone. To achieve this, he must retrieve the Maten Scripture from Genjo Sanzo and his companions, a mission that compels him to act as their enemy despite his natural inclination toward kindness.
Kougaiji possesses a strong will and a fundamentally gentle heart. He is deeply loyal to his followers and protective of his little half-sister Lirin. Unlike a typical villain, he is driven by familial duty rather than malice, and he despises the manipulative Gyokumen. He inspires genuine devotion in his personal team, the Kou-tachi, which includes Dokugakuji, his older-brother figure and bodyguard who happens to be Sha Gojyo's older half-brother, and Yaone, a skilled alchemist whose life he once saved. His relationship with Son Goku is marked by a fierce rivalry, and their clashes are a key dynamic in the story.
In combat, Kougaiji demonstrates superior physical strength, speed, and endurance typical of a powerful youkai. He is proficient in martial arts and fire sorcery, and he is knowledgeable in youjutsu, the art of summoning demonic entities. His signature technique is Engokuki, a spell that calls forth a flame-demon to strike his enemies. During the events of Saiyuki Reload, his desperation to obtain the sutra leads him to accept a strength-enhancing bracelet from the scientist Nii Jianyi. A brutal battle ensues in which Goku destroys the bracelet, leaving Kougaiji gravely injured. He is taken back to Houtou Castle and placed under Nii’s care, where he is brainwashed into a cold, single-minded killer who will stop at nothing to seize the scripture. This transformation strips away his humanity until later parts of the narrative, when his allies and his own resilient spirit eventually help him regain his true self and overcome the psychic manipulation.
