TV-Series
Description
Ni Jianyi is a supporting character in Saiyuki Reload, where he initially appears as Dr. Ni Jianyi, the sole human scientist stationed at Houtou Castle. In this role, he leads the Gyumaoh resurrection project, working alongside Gyokumen Koushu to revive the demon lord. However, this identity is a facade; his true identity is the 31st Ukoku Sanzo, one of the five highest-ranking priests, and the keeper of the Tenchi Kaigen Muten Sutra. Ni Jianyi was formerly known as Ukoku Sanzo before the death of Koumyou Sanzo ten years prior to the series' main events. After that event, he disappeared and later resurfaced under the alias Ni Jianyi. At some point, he took on a disciple named Kami-sama, a young boy he rescued from a life of slavery or prostitution, and passed down his knowledge, powers, and possessions as a Sanzo to him.

Personality-wise, Ni Jianyi presents a deceptive exterior. As the scientist, he appears calm, intelligent, and somewhat eccentric, often seen wearing bunny slippers and talking to stuffed toys, giving the impression of an absent-minded crackpot. This eccentricity masks a cold, manipulative, and calculating mind. He is described as a mastermind who treats all life as pawns, using his intelligence to orchestrate events from the shadows. He never reveals his true intentions and frequently observes the movements of the Sanzo Ikkou from afar, often encouraging trouble simply because he enjoys watching their struggles. His demeanor is enigmatic, and he rarely shows his true feelings, making him a deeply unpredictable figure.

Ni Jianyi's motivations are complex and largely self-serving. He appears to have no loyalty to either the humans or the demons he works with, and his reasons for aiding Gyokumen Koushu's resurrection project remain unknown. He seems driven by intellectual curiosity and a desire to see chaos unfold, deriving amusement from the conflicts of others. As Ukoku Sanzo, he possesses the Muten Sutra, a powerful scripture, and his role as a Sanzo gives him considerable spiritual authority, though he uses it for his own obscure ends rather than for any religious or benevolent purpose.

In terms of role in the story, Ni Jianyi is a significant antagonist. He is instrumental in the plot to revive Gyumaoh, placing him directly in opposition to Genjo Sanzo and his party. His scientific expertise allows him to direct the experiments at Houtou Castle, while his true nature as Ukoku Sanzo makes him a formidable foe on multiple fronts. He often works from behind the scenes, pulling strings and observing the outcomes of his schemes with detached amusement.

Key relationships include his connection to his disciple, Kami-sama, whom he rescued and trained. He also has a relationship with his predecessor as a Sanzo and with Genjo Sanzo, though the nature of their connection is largely antagonistic. Ni Jianyi seems to regard the Sanzo Ikkou as interesting subjects for his experiments and amusements, rather than as genuine rivals. His interactions with Gyokumen Koushu are professional, but he likely views her as another pawn.

Character development for Ni Jianyi is subtle and largely tied to his dual identity. He shows little change over the course of the series, remaining consistently enigmatic and self-interested. However, his past as Ukoku Sanzo and his actions regarding Kami-sama hint at a deeper, unexplored history that may inform his detached worldview.

Notable abilities: As Ukoku Sanzo, Ni Jianyi wields the Muten Sutra, one of the five sacred scriptures that grant immense power. He is also a highly intelligent scientist and strategist, capable of manipulating both science and magic to achieve his goals. His scientific knowledge enables him to lead the complex resurrection experiments, and his Sanzo training grants him spiritual abilities and possibly combat skills, though he prefers to avoid direct confrontation. His most notable trait is his ability to maintain an inscrutable facade, keeping his true thoughts and plans hidden from everyone around him.
