Description
Kougaiji is a youkai prince who resides in Houtou Castle as the son of the Ox King Gyumaoh and the demoness Ratsetsunyo. He is over five hundred years old but presents the appearance of a young man in his late teens. His mother has been trapped in a petrified state, and his stepmother Gyokumen Koushou has promised to restore her in exchange for his cooperation. This arrangement forces Kougaiji to act as an antagonist to the Sanzo party by attempting to seize the Maten scripture and the other sutras, a mission he undertakes out of desperate filial devotion rather than any inherent malice.

Kougaiji possesses a strong will and a fundamentally kind nature often described as a heart of gold beneath his combative exterior. He is loyal to those close to him and commands deep devotion from his followers, who serve him willingly. He harbors a deep-seated hatred for his manipulative stepmother, yet he suppresses this resentment in order to pursue the one chance to free his mother. Despite the adversarial role he is forced to play, he is not truly evil and often acts with a sense of honor.

He leads a close-knit group often referred to as the Kou-tachi. This team includes his boisterous half-sister Lirin, whom he cares for immensely; his personal bodyguard and swordsman Dokugakuji, who is in fact Sha Gojyo’s older half-brother and regards Kougaiji as the person who gave his life meaning; and the skilled alchemist Yaone, whom Kougaiji once rescued from a dangerous demon and who serves him with unwavering affection and loyalty. These relationships define much of his personal world and his decisions.

As a powerful youkai, Kougaiji possesses enhanced physical attributes including speed, strength, endurance and agility. He is proficient in martial arts and can channel fire-based attacks in combat, unleashing flame projectiles and smog. He is also knowledgeable in youjutsu, particularly demonic summoning spells. His most notable technique is the Engokuki, a flame demon summoned to trap or overwhelm his opponents. These abilities make him a formidable opponent for the Sanzo party.

Over the course of the story, Kougaiji’s development takes a dark turn. Desperate to match Goku’s power, he accepts a bracelet from the scientist Nii Jianyi that temporarily augments his strength. During an intense battle, Goku shatters the bracelet, leaving Kougaiji severely injured. Nii then takes him into his care and subjects him to brainwashing, erasing his restraint and transforming him into a cold, relentless assassin fixated solely on obtaining the scripture. This period sees him become a dangerous and single-minded threat, detached from the loyal and compassionate prince he once was. Eventually, through the efforts of his comrades and the progression of events, he is freed from the brainwashing and restored to his true self. This journey from a reluctant tool of evil through mental enslavement and back to the protective older brother and honorable leader underscores his resilience and the depth of his relationships with those who never abandoned him.
