TV-Series
Description
Katz Kobayashi, originally born Katz Howan, is a character who appears across both the original Mobile Suit Gundam and its sequel, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, with his role expanding significantly in the latter story. His life is defined by the wars that plague the Universal Century, transitioning from a child survivor to a passionate but flawed young soldier.
During the One Year War, a young Katz was orphaned on the space colony Side 7. Along with two other children, Letz and Kikka, he found refuge aboard the Federation assault ship White Base. In this chaotic environment, the trio became both beloved mascots and occasional troublemakers for the crew, with Fraw Bow acting as their primary caretaker. Despite their age, they were present for key events, including Ramba Ral's final assault and Char Aznable's infiltration of Jaburo, where they even helped disarm bombs. Following the war, these three orphans were adopted by Hayato Kobayashi and Fraw Bow, at which point Katz Howan took the surname Kobayashi.
By the time of the Gryps Conflict, Katz had grown into a sixteen-year-old young man driven by a powerful desire to emulate the heroes of his childhood, particularly Amuro Ray. He is characterized by a headstrong, reckless, and dangerously naive personality. Having learned to pilot mobile suits by operating old Zeon models at his adoptive father's museum, he possesses basic piloting skills but lacks formal combat training and the natural talent that defined his idols. This inexperience is dangerously combined with an overconfident belief in his own abilities, leading him to frequently disobey orders and launch into battle without permission, often causing more problems than he solves.
Katz's primary motivation is to prove himself as a worthy successor to the legacy of the White Base crew and to find purpose in a new war. He is initially disgusted when he reunites with a despondent Amuro Ray, whom he perceives as a coward for living under Federation surveillance. Katz's actions help spur Amuro back into action, and he subsequently joins the Karaba resistance fighters and later the Anti Earth Union Group in space. Serving as a mobile suit pilot aboard the Argama, he seeks validation through combat, often charging recklessly into dangerous situations against formidable enemies like Paptimus Scirocco and Yazan Gable.
Throughout the series, Katz develops key relationships that highlight his immaturity and drive the plot. His infatuation with Sarah Zabiarov, a young officer from the rival Titans, is a major personal flaw. Despite her being an enemy and her repeated deceptions, Katz remains convinced he can free her from the influence of Scirocco, and this emotional attachment frequently clouds his judgment. His relationship with his adoptive father, Hayato, is strained by his reckless behavior, and his interactions with the protagonist Kamille Bidan are those of a rival, though he does manage to save Kamille's life on several occasions despite his own blunders.
Katz's development follows a tragic arc, as he fails to overcome his shortcomings. His story culminates in the final battle of the Gryps Conflict, where, while piloting the FXA-05D G-Defenser, he becomes overconfident and fails to maintain spatial awareness. He is shot down by the ace pilot Yazan Gable and crashes into a wrecked battleship or meteorite, resulting in his death. In his final moments, he does not achieve the heroic end he sought, instead dying a preventable, almost ironic death due to his own arrogance. Despite this, his spirit, along with others, appears after death to assist Kamille in his final confrontation. In terms of notable abilities, Katz is a capable enough pilot to operate a mobile suit and handle support craft like the G-Defenser, but he is not a standout ace and his latent Newtype abilities, which showed a glimmer during his childhood, are significantly weaker than those of his peers and never fully manifest in combat.
