Description
Beltorchika Irma is a character introduced in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, where she operates as a member of Karaba, an anti-Titans organization based on Earth. Born in Universal Century 0067, she lost her parents as a child during Operation British, the colony drop that devastated Sydney in the One Year War. This traumatic event left her an orphan, and she was subsequently adopted by the Irma family. Her childhood admiration for the young war hero Amuro Ray, whom she watched on broadcasts during the war, deeply influenced her path, leading her to pursue a career in journalism with the hope of one day meeting him.
Physically, Beltorchika is recognized as a young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her first appearance in Zeta Gundam is notably bold, as she pilots a vintage Beechcraft D17 biplane, a replica aircraft from the 1930s, to guide the transport ship Audhumla through a mobile suit battle. This act demonstrates her initial characterization as a courageous and unconventional operative.
Personality-wise, Beltorchika is a complex figure whose traits are a source of both strength and friction. She is driven by a passionate and idealistic nature, but this is often overshadowed by a self-centered and possessive demeanor, particularly regarding Amuro Ray. Upon finally meeting Amuro aboard the Audhumla, she immediately latches onto him, showing an intense and obsessive interest that borders on hero worship. This behavior manifests as a strong possessiveness; she becomes overly protective of him and frequently acts on his behalf without his consent, believing she knows what is best for the legendary pilot. This leads to significant conflict with her allies. Most notably, she tries to convince Kamille Bidan to hand over the Gundam Mk-II to Amuro, arguing that a hero deserves a suitable mobile suit. She also displays jealousy and suspicion towards other women close to Amuro, including Mirai Yashima, whom she confronts with insensitive and rude accusations. Her aversion to war is complicated by her attachment to a soldier, and she often clashes with Quattro Bajeena (Char Aznable), distrusting him despite Amuro's reassurances.
Despite these interpersonal flaws, Beltorchika plays a pivotal role in the story's major turning point, the Battle of Dakar. She infiltrates the Earth Federation Congress building under the guise of a news reporter, using the pseudonym Karen Russell. During the operation, she risks her life by going to the rooftop to film the Titans' brutal attacks on the assembly building as Char Aznable delivers his speech revealing his identity and denouncing the Titans. Her actions in capturing this footage are crucial for broadcasting the Titans' crimes to the world and turning public opinion against them, demonstrating genuine courage and a commitment to justice.
Her key relationships define much of her character arc. Her primary relationship is with Amuro Ray, which begins as one-sided hero worship and slowly develops into a more genuine romantic partnership as they work together on Earth. This relationship is a source of personal growth for both, as Amuro begins to move past his trauma from the One Year War. Her relationship with Kamille Bidan is initially antagonistic due to her demands for the Gundam and her treatment of him, but it eventually softens into a friendlier, more respectful rapport by the end of the Gryps Conflict.
Beltorchika's role continues in other works, albeit with variations. She does not appear in the theatrical film Char's Counterattack, having been replaced by a new character, Chan Agi. However, she is central to director Yoshiyuki Tomino's novel version of the story, titled Char's Counterattack: Beltorchika's Children. In this novel, she acts in Chan's role as Amuro's partner and is pregnant with his child, surviving the conflict while Amuro does not. She later reappears in the OVA and novel Mobile Suit Gundam UC, set in UC 0096. By this time, she has parted ways with Amuro and works as an informant for the Luio & Company trading firm, providing intelligence to Captain Bright Noa and helping to connect different factions during the Laplace Incident.
Her notable abilities include her skill as a pilot, capable of handling a fragile vintage aircraft in a combat zone. Her background as a journalist provides her with investigative skills, the ability to gather intelligence, and experience with undercover work and infiltration, as demonstrated during the Dakar operation. She also shows competence as an independent operative and networker in her later role as an informant. Overall, Beltorchika Irma is a character defined by her passionate, often difficult nature, whose journey from an obsessive fan to a courageous operative and, in some continuities, a central figure in Amuro Ray's personal life, leaves a significant mark on the Universal Century timeline.
