Description
Hiromi Uesugi is the father of the protagonist, Teppei Uesugi, in the anime Ore wa Teppei. He is a central figure in his son's life, known for his unconventional and often irresponsible behavior. Hiromi is depicted as a man who has spent the majority of his life living in the mountains as a miner, constantly searching for phantom treasures. He is characterized by his alcoholic tendencies and a generally carefree attitude toward societal norms and responsibilities. Hiromi has a wild and brash personality, described in various sources as being identical to that of his son, Teppei. Like his son, he is portrayed as a lower-class lout who is rude, cocky, and willing to play dirty, often clashing with the more polished members of the Uesugi family.
Physically, Hiromi is described as a bearded giant who resembles a bear, an appearance that is accentuated by a large unibrow that he shares with his son. His name, which means "wide beauty," is considered ironic given his rugged and unattractive appearance, a fact that even Teppei finds humorous. He is an irresponsible parent who frequently gets into physical altercations with his son and even allows him to drink alcohol. Despite this abusive and wild dynamic, there is an underlying sense of mutual care. He is also noted for having his own struggles, particularly a deep-seated fear and hatred for his own mother, Teppei's grandmother, who is the strict and powerful matriarch of the Uesugi family.
Hiromi's role in the story is primarily that of a father who has raised Teppei in a feral environment, away from structured society and formal education. He lives with his son in the forest or mountains, keeping him from attending school and living a normal life. This lifestyle is the direct cause of Teppei's fish-out-of-water struggles when he is eventually forced to move to the city and integrate into his wealthy family's household and the local school. Hiromi leaves his wife Shinobu and takes Teppei with him to pursue his fruitless treasure hunting, and the pair are later found and brought back into the folds of the prestigious Uesugi family. Upon reuniting with the family, he and Teppei become the "black sheep" due to their boorish behavior, causing a great deal of turmoil and often driving the other family members to their wits' end. Throughout the story, he appears in many episodes, and his antics frequently provide both conflict and comic relief as he attempts to escape the control of his mother. His relationship with Teppei is the core of his character, defined by physical fights and shared drunken revelry, yet he sporadically shows a rough affection for his son. In terms of abilities, Hiromi does not demonstrate any notable or specialized skills within the narrative; his primary characteristics are his immense physical toughness and his aggressive, confrontational nature that seems to have been passed down to and amplified in his son.
