Description
Heisuke Tōdō, former captain of the Shinsengumi’s Eighth Division, became the lone survivor of a brutal ambush by the imperialist Masked Demons, an assault that cost him his left eye, arm, and leg. Charged by feudal lord Katamori Matsudaira to restore Kyoto’s crumbling order, he forged a substitute Shinsengumi by recruiting eight condemned criminals. Seven accepted his offer of redemption through assuming the identities of fallen captains; the eighth, refusing the pact, met swift execution.

Though plagued by self-doubt from his history of obedience over command, Heisuke shouldered leadership as the sole link to the Shinsengumi’s legacy. His efforts to discipline the unruly recruits clashed fiercely with Ichibanboshi’s volatile vendettas, jeopardizing their fragile unity. Pragmatism led him to delegate swordsmanship training to Akira, compensating for the group’s raw combat skills.

When Rashōmaru, leader of the Masked Demons, targeted Ichibanboshi in battle, Heisuke intervened at grave personal cost. His near-fatal injuries forced him to temporarily cede command to the very recruit whose recklessness he’d opposed—a sacrifice cementing his dedication to the unit’s survival. Rooted in unwavering loyalty to the shogunate, Heisuke’s strategy embraced unorthodox means: molding outlaws into Kyoto’s protectors through calculated compromise.

Adapting to his physical limitations, he balanced tactical oversight with yielding authority where necessary. His leadership evolved into a dance of firmness and adaptability, steering disparate personalities toward a shared duty. Resilience defined his journey—transforming a shattered soldier into a strategist who traded swords for shrewd pragmatism, ensuring the Shinsengumi’s shadow endured.
