Description
Princess Ana Medaiyu is the daughter of Duke Medaiyu, the ruler installed by the London IMA over the Siberian Domepolis of Urgusk. She is roughly eight years old during the events of the story and, before the journey begins, lives a highly sheltered life inside her father's household, with almost no contact with the outside world beyond her tutor and attendant, Lioubov Smettana. Despite this protected upbringing, she is lively, curious, and strong-willed, and she openly supports the Exodus, the mass departure of the Domepolis inhabitants toward their ancestral homeland of Yapan.

Ana enters the main storyline when Gainer Sanga and Gain Bijou, fleeing after stealing the Duke's Overman, encounter her in the ducal residence. Gain persuades her to come along by promising to take her to the festival, and she willingly joins the escape in the role of a hostage. In practice, her status as a hostage is almost entirely nominal. She is given nearly free rein to move about the city units of the Exodus convoy, has access wherever she wishes to go, and treats her situation as an adventure, appearing to enjoy life as a hostage even as the convoy faces constant danger from the military forces trying to stop it.

Her motivations are rooted in her confinement and her curiosity about the world. She wants to see places and meet people beyond her tutor, and the Exodus gives her the opportunity to do exactly that. She joins the journey of her own accord and conducts herself with composure and courage for a child her age, knowingly playing along with the hostage arrangement while remaining an enthusiastic supporter of the cause. Within the convoy she functions as a kind of mascot figure, and despite her youth, her political standing is close to that of the Five Sages who lead the Exodus. She does not seek to dominate others, however, and her relationship with the older leaders resembles that of a granddaughter with her elders rather than a political equal.

Her key relationships include her father, Duke Medaiyu, the authority figure she leaves behind; Lioubov Smettana, her kind, brave, and devoted tutor, who struggles at times to keep up with the princess but wishes to protect her at all costs; and Gainer and Gain, the two who take her from the palace and with whom she travels throughout the Exodus. She also has three intelligent pet squirrels that obey her every command and accompany her, adding to the lively presence she brings to the traveling community.

Over the course of the story, Ana develops from a shut-in princess with a narrow world into an active participant in the great journey, adapting to life in the moving city units and the hardships that come with it while retaining her cheerful and spirited nature. Her growth is closely tied to the Exodus itself, as the voyage provides the freedom and firsthand experience of the wider world she had always longed for. Her most notable ability is not combative in nature; rather, it is her unusual rapport with her three pet squirrels, which heed her commands, along with the courage and self-possession that allow her to face the dangers of the journey with confidence despite her young age.
