Description
Lilian Meridian is a recurring character in the Pokémon anime, primarily appearing during the Advanced Generation series. She serves as the master of ceremonies for all Pokémon Contests held in the Kanto region. Her first appearance is in the episode The Saffron Con, where she is seen testing the lighting equipment of the Saffron City Contest Hall alongside her Espeon. She is the younger sister of Vivian Meridian, the Hoenn region's Contest host, and bears a strong physical resemblance to her sister, with the main distinction being a beauty mark on her right cheek, while Vivian’s is on the left.
Lilian is an energetic and charismatic host who excels at engaging the audience. Her signature catchphrase in the English dub is Let’s Get Busy, and in the original Japanese it is Here We Go. Before each Contest, she performs a short demonstration with her Espeon, showcasing her own skill as a Pokémon Coordinator. She is friendly and approachable, often interacting with the main characters—May, Ash, Brock, and Max—and proves to be helpful and trustworthy. For example, after Harley tricks May into submitting her Contest pass application past the deadline, Lilian steps in to assist, demonstrating her willingness to go beyond her official duties.
Her role in the story is to announce and oversee the Kanto Pokémon Contests, from the introductory rounds to the final battles. She provides commentary during the performances and battles, maintaining excitement and fairness. She also presides over the Kanto Grand Festival, where she introduces the judges and special guests, including her sister Vivian. Lilian appears at several key Contests: the Saffron Contest, the Chrysanthemum Island Contest, and the Mulberry Contest, as well as the Grand Festival itself. Her presence provides continuity for the Contest arc that takes place after the main party moves from Hoenn to Kanto.
Lilian’s motivations are centered on her passion for Pokémon Contests. She takes pride in her role as host and works to ensure every event runs smoothly and entertainingly. She values the spirit of competition and shows respect for all Coordinators, regardless of the outcome. Her development is limited, as she remains a supporting character, but she demonstrates growing familiarity with the main cast and becomes a reliable figure in the Kanto Contest scene. Notably, she is the only one of the three Contest host sisters (Vivian and Marian being the others) to be seen outside of her work uniform and to be shown owning and using a Pokémon directly. Her Espeon is her partner, and she uses it in her opening performances.
In terms of abilities, Lilian is a capable Coordinator in her own right, as evidenced by her confident handling of Espeon’s moves. Her primary skill, however, lies in event management and public speaking. She maintains order, keeps the audience engaged, and handles unexpected situations with poise. Her catchphrases and stage presence make her a memorable part of the Contest episodes, and her interactions with the main characters contribute to the overall warmth of the series.
