Description
Junior is a boy who appears to be around the same age as the main character Anita King, though this outward appearance is deceptive. He is an agent of the British Library's Special Operations Division, known on missions as Agent J, and is frequently deployed on tasks related to the Gentleman Resurrection Plan. His true origins are deeply unusual; he is the son of Nancy Makuhari, a genetically altered being known as an I-Jin, and a clone of the historical figure Ikkyu. Because of his unique parentage, he was taken from his mother shortly after birth by the British Library, which intended to raise him as a perfect new vessel for the consciousness of the British Library leader known as Gentleman.

Junior's personality has been profoundly shaped by this loveless and manipulative upbringing. Raised without affection or normal human contact, his emotional expression is very muted, and he often appears shy, melancholic, and distant. Despite a polite and soft-spoken demeanor, he is a deeply troubled and lonely boy, filled with a quiet anger and confusion about his own identity. His social skills are underdeveloped, having been raised more as a tool than as a child, and he struggles to understand or engage in normal social behaviors. As an operative, he is efficient, quick to learn, and can be ruthlessly violent, drawing his gun without hesitation and acting as an assassin when his missions require it. His isolation has created a desperate, unspoken need for acknowledgement; even small acts of kindness or affection become profoundly meaningful to him. This is most evident in his growing attachment to Michelle Chang, whose gentle and caring nature towards him makes him come to see her as something like an older sister.

His core motivation throughout the story is a search for connection and truth. For much of the series, he faithfully serves his handlers, including the cold and mechanical Wendy Earheart, but also desperately seeks answers about his own past and purpose. His relationship with Wendy is complex and harsh; she treats him as an instrument, yet there are rare moments where a fractured bond is suggested, such as when he prepares a birthday dinner for her. He is ultimately a pawn for the British Library director, Joseph Carpenter, who views him merely as a vessel for Gentleman's revival and has even implanted a tracking device in his body to ensure control. The revelation that Yomiko Readman, a legendary paper master, tried and failed to save him from this fate is a turning point, as is learning that the woman he was ordered to kill, Nancy, is his mother.

Junior’s development is a journey from an exploited tool to an individual who seizes his own destiny. After discovering the truth about his planned use as Gentleman's vessel, he begins to rebel against his conditioning. In a desperate act of defiance, he manages to extract and destroy the tracking device from his own body, a brutal act of self-mutilation that temporarily disables his abilities but signifies his break from control. In the climax of the series, he is forced into the machine intended to transfer Gentleman's consciousness into him. However, his will proves strong enough to fight back; instead of being overwritten, he turns the process against his enemy, projecting part of Gentleman's energy into Joker and rendering him catatonic. This act frees him from his prescribed role as a vessel.

Junior possesses a distinct supernatural ability inherited from his mother: intangibility, or the power to phase his body through any solid or liquid matter. This allows him to walk through walls, let objects pass through him, and makes him an ideal spy and infiltrator. He also possesses enhanced physical strength and agility, a result of genetic enhancements and an artificially accelerated aging process; though he is chronologically only around six years old, he has the body of a twelve-year-old and the combat training of a seasoned operative. He is highly skilled with firearms and learns new information with remarkable speed. Ultimately, after the Gentleman Project fails and the British Library collapses, he finds a form of peace, living under Michelle's care and beginning to recover from the trauma of his engineered childhood.
