TV-Series
Description
Nenene Sumiregawa is a Japanese novelist who was a literary prodigy, publishing her debut novel at the age of thirteen. In the television series R.O.D -The TV-, she is twenty-three years old and living alone in Tokyo. Her career has stalled because she has not written a new book since her close friend and former teacher, Yomiko Readman, vanished without explanation five years earlier. This disappearance has left Nenene deeply wistful and bitter, though she has become highly self-sufficient and continues to maintain Yomiko’s personal belongings in the hope of her eventual return.
Nenene’s personality is marked by assertiveness and a sharp tongue. She is quick to become frustrated with others, especially when they interrupt her space or her writing. She often uses sarcasm and can be irritable, but this prickly exterior masks a strong sense of loyalty and a deep capacity for caring. She is reluctant to let new people into her life, yet once she does, she becomes fiercely protective of them. In the series, she initially resists the presence of the three paper-manipulating sisters—Michelle, Maggie, and Anita—who are assigned as her bodyguards after a terrorist attack at a book signing in Hong Kong. Over time, she warms to them and comes to treat them as a surrogate family.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is to find Yomiko and understand why she disappeared. The loss of Yomiko not only caused her writer’s block but also left an emotional void that colours her interactions. Her journey is one of recovering her creative voice and her ability to trust and connect with others. She plays an indispensable role as the emotional anchor of the group, grounding the story’s more fantastical elements with her human concerns and her determination.
Nenene has no supernatural abilities. Her strength lies in her intellect, her stubbornness, and her skill as a writer. She is a persuasive speaker and a keen observer of human behaviour, traits that occasionally allow her to influence events even when facing superpowered opponents. Her notable development in the series involves overcoming her bitterness, learning to accept help, and ultimately finding the confidence to write again. Her relationships with the Paper Sisters grow from antagonism to genuine affection, and her reunion with Yomiko provides the emotional climax of her arc.
