Description
Carte du Néant, also known as The Nothing, is the fifty-third and most powerful Clow Card, serving as the central figure in Cardcaptor Sakura The Movie 2: The Sealed Card. Its very existence was a secret known only to its creator, the sorcerer Clow Reed. He created this card to serve a specific cosmic purpose: to balance the immense positive magical energy of the other fifty-two Clow Cards. Because its power is negative and equivalent in magnitude to all the other cards combined, it was deemed too dangerous to be kept in the Clow Book. Instead, Clow Reed sealed the card beneath his mansion, where it remained undisturbed for many years, maintaining the energetic equilibrium of the entire deck.
When Sakura Kinomoto transformed the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards, she unknowingly altered their magical signature. This shift broke the delicate balance that had kept Carte du Néant sealed away. Freed from its prison, the card manifested in the physical world as a young girl with long, flowing silver hair and sorrowful eyes, residing within a dark, spherical void. Her appearance also features delicate wings atop her head and a frilled dress, but her most prominent feature is a constant expression of deep loneliness and sadness.
The personality of Carte du Néant is a direct reflection of its tragic history. Having spent an eternity sealed in isolation, its primary driving motivation is a profound terror of being alone. This loneliness manifests as a possessive and desperate need for companionship. The only beings it could safely interact with without destroying them were the other Clow Cards, whom it views as its friends. When Sakura became the new master of the cards, Carte du Néant saw her as a villain who had stolen its companions. Its actions throughout the film are driven by a childlike but destructive logic: by reclaiming the Sakura Cards, it could ensure it would never be lonely again. To achieve this, it displays a combination of arrogance and intelligence, underestimating its opponents while demonstrating cunning, such as erasing phone lines to prevent Eriol from warning Sakura.
In the story, Carte du Néant is the primary antagonist. Its power is absolute within its sphere of influence, as any person or object it touches is erased from existence and returned to nothingness. It systematically steals Sakura's cards and uses its abilities to make objects like carousel horses come to life as attackers. Notably, its power is so great that it is immune to the magic of the guardians Keroberos and Yue. Its role escalates from a hidden threat to a direct destroyer, erasing Sakura's friends, family, and parts of Tomoeda itself, forcing Sakura into a final confrontation where she must not only defeat the card but also understand its pain.
Key relationships are central to Carte du Néant's development. Its initial relationship with Sakura is adversarial, born of jealousy and a sense of betrayal. However, at its core, the card's actions are a cry for connection. The most pivotal relationship is with a unique entity known as the Nameless Card. This card was not a Clow Card but was spontaneously created by Sakura's own magic from a tear she shed over her feelings for Syaoran Li. When the time came to seal Carte du Néant, the rules dictated that the feelings of the person with the most magical energy nearby would be erased as a price. Syaoran was chosen by this toll, but the Nameless Card, representing Sakura's love, sacrificed itself and fused with Carte du Néant.
The development of Carte du Néant is the emotional core of the film. It transforms from a being of pure, destructive loneliness into something new. When Sakura, understanding the card's pain, offers her own friendship and refuses to abandon it, the card's despair begins to lift. This emotional resolution, combined with the Nameless Card's sacrifice, causes a miraculous transformation. Carte du Néant and the Nameless Card merge to become a new entity entirely: The Hope. As The Hope, its destructive nature is neutralized, its power is reborn as something positive, and all the damage and disappearances it caused are reversed at sunrise. The sorrowful girl in the void is last seen with a genuine smile, clasping the winged heart that symbolized the Nameless Card, finally at peace and no longer alone.
In terms of abilities, Carte du Néant’s signature power is the creation of dark spheres that can enclose and erase anything they touch, sending it into a state of non-being. This includes not only physical objects and people but also intangible things like telephone signals and magical communications. It can teleport, levitate, and control inanimate objects. Its magical power is so vast that it is nearly impervious to the attacks of other magical beings, standing unaffected against the guardians' strongest moves. Its presence is also immense, allowing it to sense and intercept magical surveillance or warnings from afar. Ultimately, its most notable ability is its transformation, through sacrifice and understanding, from The Nothing into The Hope.
