Description
Eriol Hiiragizawa appears in Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card as a character who has already returned to his home in England after the events of the television series. His physical appearance is that of a young boy with dark blue hair, fair skin, and large grey eyes concealed behind square-framed glasses. While he presents as a child attending elementary school, his true nature is far more complex, as he is the reincarnation of the powerful sorcerer Clow Reed, possessing all of Clow Reed's vast magical power and memories. His actual age is unknown, as he halted his own aging process in order to become a classmate of the protagonist, Sakura Kinomoto.
In terms of personality, Eriol is typically calm, serious, and determined, carrying himself with a level of maturity that far exceeds his apparent age. He is highly intelligent and excels in various activities including academics, cooking, music, and sports. Despite his serious demeanor, he possesses a mischievous side and has been known to create elaborate situations using his magic, partly for the purpose of testing Sakura and partly for his own amusement. He speaks politely to Sakura and her friends, but uses a more casual tone when addressing magical beings such as guardians.
Eriol's primary motivation throughout the series has been to ensure that Sakura becomes a worthy and powerful master of the magical cards originally created by Clow Reed. He deliberately creates challenges that force Sakura to transform the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards, which draw upon her own magical energy rather than the dwindling magic left in them by Clow Reed. This is done to prevent the cards from losing their power entirely. In the context of the second movie, his role is somewhat different, as he no longer resides in Japan but remains a source of crucial guidance.
In Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card, Eriol's role is that of a distant advisor. After his former house in Tomoeda is demolished to make way for an amusement park, a hidden fifty-third Clow Card known as the Nothing is accidentally released. This card possesses immense negative power, balanced against the positive power of the other cards combined. As the card begins stealing Sakura's transformed cards and causing parts of the city to disappear, Sakura contacts Eriol in England for help. He provides her with vital information about the Nothing's origin and nature, and delivers the warning that to capture the card, Sakura would have to sacrifice her most important feeling, which has become her romantic love for her friend Syaoran Li.
Key relationships in Eriol's life include his guardians, Ruby Moon and Spinel Sun, who assist him in his magical endeavors and are based on similar designs to Sakura's guardians, Yue and Cerberus. He also shares a close bond with Kaho Mizuki, a teacher who is aware of his true identity and with whom he has mutual romantic feelings. He maintains a friendly relationship with Sakura Kinomoto, whom he regards with deep care and respect, though not in a romantic sense. He interacts cordially with Syaoran Li, despite Syaoran's initial jealousy and suspicion toward him, and he is aware of Syaoran's feelings for Sakura from early on.
Throughout the storyline, Eriol demonstrates significant development in his role as a mentor figure. By the time of the movie, he has largely stepped back from directly influencing events, allowing Sakura to face challenges on her own while offering crucial information when necessary. His actions are intended to help Sakura grow into her power, and he shows no desire to reclaim the magical legacy he inherited from his past life. In the manga continuity, he ultimately asks Sakura to split his power in half, giving part to her father, because he no longer wishes to be the most powerful sorcerer in the world.
Eriol possesses extraordinary magical abilities drawn from both light and darkness. He is capable of high-level spell-casting, elemental magic, creating sentient magical beings, animating objects, augmenting the powers of others, and controlling shadows and darkness. He can fly and levitate, and his magic remains formidable even without the use of the magical cards. He created his own guardians, Ruby Moon and Spinel Sun, who serve him faithfully and are magically powerful in their own right. His magic staff is longer than Sakura's, reflecting his greater experience and power. His abilities are such that he can effortlessly employ magic that would be challenging for other sorcerers, and he has demonstrated the power to amplify the abilities of others so they can overcome powerful opponents.
