Description
Cleo Everlasting is a central character from the anime series Orphen, including its sequel Orphen: The Revenge. She is a spirited young woman of seventeen years with fair skin, long blonde hair, and pale blue eyes, often recognized by the two distinctive twirls of hair on each side of her head. Standing 155 centimeters tall, she comes from a wealthy, noble family based in the city of Totokanta, where she lives as the youngest daughter.
As a person, Cleo is outgoing and carefree, but she can also be bratty and has a strong reluctance to admit when she is wrong. Her upbringing was quite sheltered, which left her feeling restless and eager to break free from the confines of her noble life. She is described as tomboyish and feisty, often teasing her companions and clashing with the sorcerer Orphen due to their opposing personalities. Despite this, she is genuinely brave and kind, showing an unusual interest in sorcery rather than the fear one might expect. Beneath her confident and sometimes abrasive exterior lies a deep-seated vulnerability; she fears being useless and worries that Orphen sees her merely as a burden or a child in need of protection.
Her primary motivation is a desire for adventure and to leave her sheltered existence behind. She initially joins Orphen on his journey, claiming she wants to protect the valuable Sword of Baltanders, which she inherited from her father. However, a deeper reason for her involvement is her secret admiration for Orphen, whom she had seen from afar a year before their journey began. More than anything, Cleo strives to become a reliable partner to him, determined to contribute meaningfully despite being the only member of their group without formal training in magic.
In the story, Cleo serves as a key companion to Orphen and his apprentice, Majic. Her role often puts her in the position of grounding the group, providing a pragmatic and emotional counterpoint to Orphens more obsessive and cynical nature. While Orphen is focused on his quest to save his sister figure Azalie, Cleo consistently pushes to be seen as an equal partner rather than a passenger. Her insistence on joining the adventure frequently puts her in the middle of dangerous conflicts, from fighting creatures to facing powerful sorcerers.
Cleo has several key relationships that define her journey. Her dynamic with Orphen is central to the series, evolving from constant bickering and mutual annoyance to a deep bond of trust, respect, and eventually, romantic love. By the end of their story, they settle down together and have three daughters. She also shares a strong bond with Majic, often using him as an unsuspecting test subject for pranks she intends to play on Orphen, while also showing care for him, such as re-sewing his clothes for her own use. One of her most significant relationships is with a Deep Dragon cub she rescues, whom she names Leki. Leki becomes her constant companion and familiar, and through their empathetic link, Cleo is able to access her own latent magical abilities.
Throughout her journey, Cleo undergoes notable development. Initially portrayed as a somewhat spoiled and naive rich girl, she matures into a resilient and capable adventurer. A major point of internal conflict is her insecurity about being the only non-sorcerer in the group, which forces her to find other ways to be valuable.. Her courage and kindness frequently drive the plot, such as when she stands up to the Deep Dragon Asraliel or destroys a celestial doll to free a new ally named Mädchen from mind control. These experiences harden her resolve and prove that her worth is not tied to magical power but to her fierce loyalty and bravery.
Regarding her abilities, Cleo is surprisingly athletic and a skilled fencer. She received basic sword fighting lessons from a war club she attended at school, and she proves capable of holding her own in combat against trained opponents, including a disguised Hartia. Her physical strength is also notable, as she is shown to be strong enough to topple a golem with a single kick. While she cannot consciously perform sorcery for much of the series, it is revealed that she possesses an uncanny magical capacity. She unconsciously channels this magic through her companion Leki, using the Deep Dragon as a medium. Later, this bond allows her to develop her powers further, leading her to train formally in sorcery.
